That all worked fine but now every time i try and close the 'original' Personal Folders file created during the Outlook Install (in C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook)

The link you provided tells me to modify my registry at
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software
That location does not exist in my registry
The othe radvice it gave does not work for my problem
I have also run the Installer cleanup utiltiy and uninstalled Office and then re-installed
The problem remains as it was originally. Still cannot close the PST file
You may have a corrupt profile. Try this:
Create a new Outlook profile using your existing Personal Folders file and other services. To create a new Outlook profile, use the steps in the following article:
http://support.microsoft.c
More feedback....if anyone is still watching?
Whilst Outlook was open I tried re-opening the original PST file by right clicking on the main data folder and selecting "Open Outlook Data File...". This took me to the Outlook. PST in Local Settings/Application Data/Microsoft/Outlook/
When I selected to open the data file I got an error message (see attached files)?
I also searched my root C:\ and all subfolders for "PIM_DBG.log" but it was not found?
This may or may not help some of you out there help me with my problem?
pjnofrills: You suggested a corrupt profile and to go to http://support.microsoft.c
Did as the link suggested and created a new profile and opened outlook from the new profile. It did not work. I ended up with 2 personal data files. The new one for the new profile and the problem one. I tried restarting outlook and making my own data file the default delivery location.
On re-opening outlook the next time, I then had my data file and the two personal data files. I could close one of these (obviously this had to be the one belonging to the new profile) but the second one came back with the same old error. Aaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrgh !!!
