Outlook 2007 attachment error message

when I open an attachment in outlook I get the following message.
The attachment "attachment" from message "message" is open or in use by another application. If you continue, you will lose any changes you made to the attachment that is useing the other application. Do you want to continue?
This message can not be cleared by 'YES', 'NO', or tring to close the window with the 'X' until you close the attachment.  This happens with Excel, Word, PDF, wav extensions and only started in the last couple of weeks.
Office 2007, Vista 64 or Vista 32

Hello FLA_2925,

Can you save the attachment as a file and open the file without the error message?

If you still get an error messge from opening file, then do you have a document you are editing in same application, as the warning states?

What types of attachment are you getting the warning?

Hope this helps!

if I save the attachment 1st, it opens fine. It's only when you open the message, then open the attachment that you get the error.  This happens with .xls, .xlsx, .pdf, .wav, .doc, .docx
Several users have reported problem like this in Outlook 2007.  Make sure you have Office 2007 SP1 installed.

Is this on emails that you have actually received?

Or is this when creating an email and attaching an document.

As you will get this msg if you open a New Email, attach a document, Open the document inside the new email to view it and try to close or send the email msg while the document is still open.

If you make sure that the opened document from the email has been closed you will not get this msg.

However, if you get this msg when opening attachments that have been sent to you.
Close Outlook and reopen using Start>Run>Outlook.exe /safe
check and see if you get the same msg here.

If you do, close Outlook once more and re-open using
Start>Run>Outlook.exe /cleanprofile

Now, try again
this is only on recieved emails.

opening outlook in safe mode allows me to open the attachment without the error.

opening outlook with a cleanprofile had no effect, I still got the error when opening an attachment

the final answer seemed to be the VBA add-in, the stated 'Load Behavior' is "Load on Demand", after disableing & enableing all of my add-ins this one remains "not currently loaded" and the attachments work fine.  I'll try to remember to post an update if it happens again and this add-in is loaded
MS Outlook caches registry settings in a file called extend.dat, which may be out of synch with the actual registry.  If so, it could cause this problem, among others.  If this file is deleted, it will be re-created the next time you re-open Outlook.

To try this solution:
1. Exit all programs.
2. Search your computer for "extend.dat" (note: it is typically found in the C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook folder).
3. Rename the file to extend.bak
4. Restart Microsoft Outlook; a new extend.dat based on current registry information should be created.
