Question

Outlook 2007 cannot open or preview attachments

Asked by: amac80

I have found that a lot of people have this problem, but none of their solutions have worked for me.  I just installed Office 2007 yesterday onto a new computer and Outlook will not allow me to view or download my attachments of any kind, even plain ol' text documents.  When I click on them, it doesn't do anything at all.  I do not, nor ever have had, Google Desktop installed; I do not use Norton/Symantec antivirus software; I do not have any of the add-ons people say cause this issue listed in my Trust Center.  Any assistance is appreciated!

Open Outlook -> Tools -> Trust Center. Look through the various options, but in particular look Attachment Handling. I cannot tell from your post if you looked there. If there are no previewers installed, this may explain the issue. ... Thinkpads_User

What kind of mail system are you trying to use with Outlook; Exchange, POP3/IMAP, or HTTP?

I am using a POP3 mail system, brn_alvarez.

thinkpads_user, in Attachment Handling, I have the following viewers installed:  Adobe PDF Preview Handler, Microsoft Office Excel previewer, Microsoft Office Outlook image previewer, Microsoft Office Outlook message and item previewer, Microsoft Office Outlook text document previewer, Microsoft Office Outlook vCard previewer, Microsoft Office PowerPoint previewer, Microsoft Office Visio previewer, Microsoft Office Word previewer and PDF Preview Handler for Vista (even though I'm not running Vista, I'm running XP, my machine is Vista-capable).

If you have got Trust Center set and then if you can not open nor preview attachments, there could be something wrong with Outlook. First, look in Actions -> Junk Email Options and see if Disable Links is checked (default) and try unchecking it. I have it unchecked.

It that fails, go to Help -> Office Diagnostics and run that. See if that can lead you to an Office (Outlook) Repair. ... Thinkpads_User

This is a (very) long known bug with Adobe on x64 OS.  See this forum:

I suggest you add to the many, many bug reports already submitted.

danncox, thanks for the info.  Tried it; no luck.  It isn't just pdf's I have problems with, it's any attachment.  I can't even click on it in the email attachment bar, so there's some kind of Outlook issue.  Oh well!  Thanks for the info & I have added my name to the list for the Adobe bug.

I appreciate everyone's help in trying to solve this problem.  Sadly, no solution could be found.  I obviously had something unknown causing my problem.  Thank you to everyone for your time and knowledge; at least I ruled out a lot of things.  I have assigned points evenly as you all helped me find out what wasn't wrong, which can be just as helpful as what is wrong.
