Question

Right margin being cut off when printing HTML emails from Outlook 2003

Asked by: mathiesen-data

We have 2 2003 terminal servers. One of them got upgraded yesterday with all security updates.
I am having a curious problem printing from Outlook on the terminal server just upgraded with security patches.
The right hand side of the print gets cut off. Mails received as RTF or HTML gets cut. Plain text is ok.
I would think it could have something to do with IE 8, since printing of HTML mails goes through those settings.

I have checked the IE margins, they get transferred using TS roaming profiles. So all settings should be identical whether one or the other server.
Print looks fine from unpatched machine without ie8, print is bad from patched machine with ie8.
Same printer installed as a network printer. tried other printers, but all of them get cut.

mathiesen-data--You say you have checked margins.  Was this in Page Setup? Look at this reference
http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6129_102-0.html?threadID=349359
However, if that does not work, set the Margins as small as possible--generally 0.125-0.25 inches.  The reverse of the above suggestion!  http://www.experts-exchange.com/Software/Office_Productivity/Groupware/Outlook/Q_23809508.html

Hi
Thank you for your response.
I already googled those 2, and tried 0,25 and 0,10. I didnt change at all. However, what troubles me the most is that it is roaming profiles.
This setting is transferred between the working and non working. So I doubt that the problem should be found here.
If I print in landscape, it doesnt cut the right of the page.
I tried getting the customer to send me the email, and im also having problems printing this mail.
I have tried in office on a Winxp with Office 2007 and ie7,  and on a Win2003, office 2003 with ie8. None of them could print the email correctly, but not the exact same cut problem.

mathiesen-data--YOu might look at Print Preview on a PC that is cutting the margin and on a PC that is not.  Is "Shrink to Fit" indicated in the dropdown menu in the Menu bar in both cases?  If not what is indicated in the Menu bar on the PC that cuts the margin?

by: mathiesen-dataPosted on 2009-07-30 at 10:13:38ID: 24982050

I know that shrink to fit is activated on both. As i recollect its not possible to preview print. I Will check tomorrow.

The case has been handed over to the web programmers. I therefore won't be spending anymore time on this matter. (Hopefully)
Thanks for you suggestions though

I have the same problem on my terminal servers after upgrading from IE6 to IE8. After lots of googling i understand its a problem with tables and frames. The mails im having trouble with have tables.

I read somewhere that the print engine cant handle tables/frames with default or auto size correctly and that makes them become bigger than the print engine expects it to be and therefor cuts the right side.

Ive read lots of people reporting this problem but no solution. Lots of workarounds thou which dont work for me since my customers are customers(!)... and it just should work!

Has anyone reported this to MS?

IT's Actually a bug here is the hotfix unfortunately looks like xp or 2003 is not considered.  Although you can extract the two dll files from the vista32 bit version and replace the ones in you system32 fodler manually . That worked for me .

To confirm ipinvader's comment.  This is how we fixed our problem too.  We found a throw-away laptop w/ Vista Home Premium (since the fix can only be installed on Vista or 2008), installed the 980333 hotfix (make sure you pick the proper version for your workstation), and grabbed the 2 dlls.  ieframe.dll and ieui.dll.  We then transplanted the DLLs to the XP Workstations which require them.  Renamed the original DLLs, then copy the 2 new DLLs to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\.

We don't know how these 2 DLLs would affect IE in other functions, but it did fix the print problem.

FYI, the hotfix actually corrupted the VIsta workstation, so we had to perform a system restore, but after we grabbed the DLLs.

FYI, the Vista hotfix
