Outlook 2007 wrapping text

I have tried setting page layout in Word as it is the default editor, but nothing changes.  I have set the maximum characters in Tools -> Options ->
Mail Format -> Internet Format & where is says to automatically wrap text, I have entered the maximum  value of 132.  I have even disabled the following: Tools -> options -> email options -> Remove extra line breaks in plain text messages

Some users do not have a problem with their text wrapping so short.  We have confirmed all our settings.  We all run Office 2007. The only difference is some of us are on XP and others on Vista.  We are running off of Exchange 2003, however we do not have access to the servers to verify any settings.  We also are automatically set to "plain text".

How can we disable emails from word wrapping and just allow <Enter> to be the line break?

Is it same for rich text and plain text?

by: mdmcq5Posted on 2009-10-05 at 07:29:32ID: 25495592

Our settings are enforced via Group Policy and we can't send any other way - we're tied to Plain Text.

looks strange, Have you tried below

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/287543

by: mdmcq5Posted on 2009-10-05 at 07:57:13ID: 25495882

that didn't change anything...

If you want to disable "word wrapping" you will need to click "New" to open a blank email. Then click on the Office button and select Editor Options in the lower right hand corner. Select Advanced and then scroll down to "Display e-mail content" section. Uncheck "Show text wrapped within the document window".

Keep in mind that disabling this feature will cause the message to go on and on unless you use the enter key to cause a line break.

by: mdmcq5Posted on 2009-10-05 at 09:03:12ID: 25496512

I've tried that already - still wraps everything.

Try opening Outlook in safemode and see if that changes anything.

tried in safe mode - same thing. I've also confirmed the users running XP and vista have the exact version of Outlook 2007

by: MYCUPosted on 2009-10-05 at 09:39:04ID: 25496868

Try this:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=823921

Although it references Outlook 2003, the registery changes can be made in 2007. The registry key you will need will be 12.0 instead of 11.0

what is the editor selected under mail format? is it greyed out to edit.

by: mdmcq5Posted on 2009-10-05 at 11:19:35ID: 25497944

I dont have access privileges to change or even view the registry keys.  All our departments are seperated so I'd have to locate a domain admin who's even willing to come to my desk to view the registry.  I am a domain admin, just not on my desktop environment.  And I'm running Outlook 2007 so it's automatically uses Word as the editor.

I found another article that may help:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922248

However, it requires you to have access to the exchange server, which you don't have. Without you being able to edit the registry or access settings on the exchange server this problem becomes more difficult. Other than checking these settings, the only other things I can think to try are to repair Outlook, create a new Outlook profle, or remove and reinstall the software.

by: mdmcq5Posted on 2009-10-05 at 11:51:58ID: 25498314

I dont think the value is tied to exchange as their are users who do not have the word wrap problem...

Do you use a form, if so try

Open the form in design mode.
Right-click the Text field, and then click Properties.
On the Display tab, click Multi-line.
Click Apply.
Click OK.
Republish the form.

If not, confirm wht email editor you see?

by: mdmcq5Posted on 2009-10-06 at 13:21:10ID: 25509497

Dont use a form and we're running Outlook 2007 which doesn't use any other editor but Word 2007...

we have also looked at the registry keys and have created - but nothing has changed..

If possible, try create a new profile in Outlook and see if the issue persists.

by: mdmcq5Posted on 2009-10-06 at 14:38:17ID: 25510205

hmmmm - wonder why that easy step was never even considered. you have be on to something MYCU. I did try on mine and the issue appears resolved, at least for now, but i need to try on about 15 other workstations...I'll keep you posted.

by: MYCUPosted on 2009-10-06 at 14:50:48ID: 25510297

I didn't consider it because you said that it involved multiple systems. I mean, how often is it that 15 workstations need a new profile? Hopefully this fixes the issue though.

by: mdmcq5Posted on 2009-10-06 at 15:01:16ID: 25510385

ok, so creating the new profile worked for about 2 minutes. next thing we know, after sending an email or two, once sending the wordwrap has returned.

by: MYCUPosted on 2009-10-06 at 15:18:23ID: 25510516

Actually I did mention creating a new profile yesterday......man it's been a long day :) Try repairing Outlook and see if that fixes it. If not a remove and reinstall would be the next step.

by: mdmcq5Posted on 2009-10-06 at 15:33:18ID: 25510629

Oh, I see where you said it originally.  Uninstalling and reinstalling isn't quite an option as our workstations are imaged and getting the CD would be an act of congress.  I tried the repair, but no change.  This is just annoying.

Try this, Close out of Outlook and rename the Outcmd.dat file to old. It is most likely located in a hidden folder found here: C:\Documents and Settings\"Your name"\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

Because Word is automatically set as the default mail editor for Outlook 2007 try deleting the normal.dotm file for Word, which I believe is also hidden.

by: mdmcq5Posted on 2009-10-06 at 16:55:46ID: 25511089

I'll keep you posted tomorrow.

by: mdmcq5Posted on 2009-10-07 at 06:32:11ID: 25515098

I'm running on Vista & believe the outcmd.dat should be here C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook I have searched hidden files, etc and cannot locate.  The only files in that folder are Extend.dat, .ost, .pst, spscoll.dat and some oab files.  In my roaming profile there are just NKs, srs & xml files.  I have gone ahead and deleted all of these files along with the normal.dotm and still the same issue.  Once Outlook is relaunched the extend.dat file recreates but never an outcmd file.

by: mdmcq5Posted on 2009-10-07 at 08:12:33ID: 25516375

the problem definitely looks to be tied to the vista machines not xp. and unbelievably I was able to launch the registry today but couldn't the other day and asked teh admin to come over and set the WrapLine value.  Well, doesn't look like he did or either the changes didn't save as the DWORD wasn't there. So I recreated and right now the lines are not wrapping. Like last time, when recreating the profile that worked for about 20 minutes so I'm going to wait to close this ticket.

Thank you everyone for your input.

Adding the registry value resolved the wordwrap issue. Thx!
