Question

access to Outlook 2007 from any of three multi-boot operating systems

Asked by: Dean_S

I have two 320GB hard disks.  On one there are Vista Business 32 bit and Vista Business 64 bit, and Windows 7 Professional 64 bit.
I have data only on the second disk, which I access from any of the three OSs.
I would like to open Outlook's Email from any OS, and I thought this could be achieved if it was on the data disk.  How can I put the email program there?
Thanks, Dean_S

Hi,

Just install the Outlook on every OS(Vista 32/64 bit & Windows 7 64bit) and call the same PST file from your data disk in each outlook.

You need to change default Microsoft Outlook offline file location.
Create directory on "local shared disk" and follow procedure bellow on all OS.

For change the location where your offline files are saved:
   1. Exit Outlook.
   2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
   3. Double-click Mail, and then click E-mail Accounts.
   4. Click View or change existing e-mail accounts, and then click Next.
   5. Select the Microsoft Exchange Server account, and then click Change.
   6. Clear the Use Cached Exchange Mode check box.
   7. Click More Settings.
   8. Click the Advanced tab.
   9. Click Offline Folder File Settings.
  10. Click Disable Offline Use, and then click Yes in the dialog box that appears.
  11. Click Offline Folder File Settings.
  12. Click Browse, go to the location where you want to save your .ost file, and then click Open.
  13. Click OK.
  14. Select the Use Cached Exchange Mode check box.
  15. Click Next, and then click Finish.

ou... and you can't just copy Outlook to "shared disk" you need to install it on all OS.

You can not 'cross platform' Outlook 2007.

by: DanCh99Posted on 2009-11-06 at 07:59:17ID: 25760248

Not sure what Senad is referring to, but the earlier posts give solid information on how Outlook *can* work across different OSs.

Thank you for the responses. I do have Office 2007 including Outlook installed in each operating partition, but am unsure of how to precisely move relevant folders to the data disk.  I have looked at a number of references on the web, but found what seem to be confusing differences.

I have tried to follow the steps listed by dlSmlSS but stumble at 4 and 5. There is no View showing, so I clicked "change".  I do not have a Microsoft Exchange Server Account - the Server Information lists the Incoming and Outgoing mail server as "mail.bigpond.com".

There is, however, in the window at step 4 showing at the bottom a "Change Folder" box  when I select under Name my email Name and under Type POP/SMTP  Next to the box the location of the mail\inbox is given as ......C:\Users\dean\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook.pst.

If you use a POP3 (POP3: A common protocol that is used to retrieve e-mail messages from an Internet e-mail server.) e-mail account, which is one of the more common types of personal e-mail accounts, your e-mail messages are downloaded from your POP3 e-mail server at your Internet service provider (ISP) (ISP: Eg. mail.isp.com .  Some ISPs are multinational, offering access in many locations, while others are limited to a specific region.) to your computer and delivered to and stored locally in a Personal Folders file (.pst) (Personal Folders file (.pst): Data file that stores your messages and other items on your computer. You can assign a .pst file to be the default delivery location for e-mail messages. You can use a .pst to organize and back up items for safekeeping.) named Outlook.pst (the default data file name). Outlook.pst is stored in the <drive>:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook folder

So what you need to do is  turn on the display of hidden folders. In Windows Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Folder Options. On the View tab, under Advanced Settings, under Files and Folders, under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders. If you want to see all file name extensions, clear the Hide extensions for known file types check box under Files and Folders. Hidden folders appear dimmed to indicate they are not typical folders.

I assume your mails are working at in one os, select that os 1st. and unhide the files. and go to the location where outlook.pst reside. simply copy that file. ( Rememeber outlook should not run when u do copieng) and now create new folder in D drive called PST paste that copied file in to the folder.

3. your 1st task is finished., second one is to open control panel and go to mail. and select your profile . add a pst file, choose the location, D:Pst\outlook.pst. and make that default pst for downloading email. now ur done one os.
4 go to all other os, add that pst files. and make that default file.
5. You are done pal. Buzz me if you have issue..
Regards
Jayesh

when you install diff. os each have their own registry.
setup in one os writes to that registry.
so use your brains....

Thanks, Jayesh,

Have just tried to do the actions you have listed, and have copied to the Outlook.pst file to D:\PST.  (Incidentally, should I copy any other files, for example "archive.pst")?

In no.3, however, I get the message "The profile name you entered is not valid or contains characters  that  are not supported in your current Windows system code page. Enter a different profile name."

I am using Vista Business 32 bit, and what I tried to enter in the New Profile box as profile name was
            D:PST\outlook.pst
I also tried Pst instead of PST, and Outlook instead of outlook, and D:\PST\Outlook.pst............and.got the same message.

The steps I have taken are - open Mail, select Profiles, and the get a box called Mail that has has only a General tab.  Under the heading "The following profiles are set up on this computer:"shows Outlook highlighted. There buttons for Add, Remove, Properties and Copy below.

I have also looked at E-mail Accounts in Mail Setup - Outlook.  This has a Change Folder box, but only seems to apply to the current C drive location.

What do you suggest?  Thanks, Dean_S

Under 3rd step, go to control panel, choose mail option. and select datafile, add the data file in to the box, choose the location D:\\outlook.post. and add it.and make that file in to default file. do it in all the os. it will work . sure 100 percent.

Jayesh

do not need to edit the existing profile, simply add the data file ( pst file from the location ( D:\\outlook.pst ).

Thanks again Jayesh  --  I have changed the default folder from

Dean's mail          Outlook.pst in C:\Users\dean\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook
to
Dean's mail-D       Outlook.pst in D:\PST

and both now show in the Navigation Pane, with the D:\PST  the top one.
I then sent myself a test email .  It showed in the Outbox of the D list, but was received in the old Dean's mail inbox.  I then went to another computer and sent an email - it to went to the old box also.

Do I need to close the old Dean's mail?  I hesitate to try this in case I end up with unanticipated problems...................Regards, Dean

by: jayeshputhoorPosted on 2009-11-08 at 04:32:36ID: 25770279

Hi, you need to make sure, u selected D:\\outlook.pst is your default for recieving mails. if you do so outlook will download all emails to outlook.pst file. so even you go other os, you can see all the old emails with pst file you hve already added in outlook, remember you need to add the email account and isp settings in all the outlook os. then it will download it to default pst. hope it will work sure.

Thanks once more,Jayesh,

Now have "Dean's mail-D" properly in place as default, and confirmed by sending and receiving test emails. On right clicking, then Properties and Advanced confirmed that this is located in D:\PST\Outlook.pst.

Unless you advise against it, I now propose to close the old Dean's mail.

A couple of follow up questions, if I may:-

1. Should I try to put the Archive.pst folder in D drive, and if so - any problems? (Its present content is 470MB.)

2. I presume all the other items in the C:\Users .etc.....\Outlook location relate to the working of Outlook in the respective operating system and are to be left alone!

Regards, Dean

Hi, You can put archieve.pst in to the D:\PST folder. no issues. and you can add that archieve in to outlook datafile( Same way how you added outlook.pst) . but do not make it as default. Default one should be the outlook.pst file.
2. Yes, you must leave that folder.wrong changes in outlook folder will leads to the currepted output.
