OUTLOOK - delete emails after 5 days rule.

Is there a rule on outlook that will allow emails to be deleted afer 5 days if they are not read.

Hi, masterkilla.

No, there's not.  Rules only work when items are sent or received.  They do not work on items already in the mailbox.  The exception to that rule is that you can always run a rule manually against a folder.  Another problem is that the rules engine doesn't have a condition for the age of a message or to test if it's unread.  That makes sense when you consider that rules are mostly for incoming messages which couldn't have been read since they just arrived.

It is possible to do this with a fairly simple bit of scripting.  If you're interested in that kind of solution, then I can post the script and instructions.

Is there a way to make this function run wihout the having to start outlook each time. If not then i think the macro might be a good option.

Hi Blue,

I think I'll go with the script you supplied. Will have to apply this on a users machine on Monday. It's just to make life easier for one of the users in the firm i work for. Once again, many thanks. I didn't know such things could be run in OUTLOOK :)
You're welcome.  Script support is one of the reasons that I'm such an Outlook fan.  It allows anyone withe script writing experience the ability to add functionality to the product.  I can't make it do everything I want it to, but I can do a huge number of things that make Outlook better, simpler, more useful.
