Outlook 2010 keeps asking for password
This problem started about a month ago. When using my Outlook 2010, I started getting prompt for a password. I would put in the password, but it would continue to ask. I changed my password; created a new profile; repaired the .ost file and even when into my profile and changed the file with the very long name to old and re-opened Outlook. The problem still exists. I have tried everything that I have seen on-line. Does anyone out here have any other suggestions?
Thanks

If this only happens on a single computer, then I would suspect the user password cache. Try clearing this and trying again.
ASKER
How do I clear the password cache. It is only happening on mine and one other person.
Are you using Exchange in your environment? Try going into Control Panel and then clearing the Credential Manager.
Also try creating another local Outlook profile, has your MS Office suite been updated with the latest Service packs and patches?

Hi there,
to clear password from cache, go to Control Panel, User accounts, Manage your credentials.
There you will see credentials for a bunch of thing, and among then one for Outlook.

Surprisingly I have nothing saved in the credential manager. Never have and I don't understand why. But this is a question for another day. So technically I have no cached passwords.
When you go to control panel, email, account settings, change.. do you have Negotiate security and is "always ask for credentials" unchecked?

Yes, it is. Mind you, this just started a month ago with no apparent changes to my system.
Have you tried scanning the machine for any potential malicious infections? Also have you tried an Office Re-install?
Are these imap/pop or Exchange mailboxes?
Try taking the accounts out of Cached exchange mode and see if that helps.

I have run for viruses and malware; I have not reinstalled office, but rebuilt a new profile. This is an exchange mailbox. I took the account out of cached exchange mode to see what happens.
Keep us posted on the results.
ASKER
Okay. This is what I did. I uninstalled Outlook. created a new profile on my computer, reinstalled outlook and still have the same problem. I now notice that the problem happens on my Android - Note 3 for this exchange account. What is going on here??
If you try this on any other computer .. do you have the same problem?
In the credential prompt, against which service it is asking the credentials.
Run, outlook connectivity test, you will see some components status is not "Established". Just note down which server/service the connection is not established. Thats the point to catch.

I will see and let you know.

I logged onto another computer and pulled up an email. The problem occurred on that computer also. This is absolutely crazy. I have no idea why is just started happening.
ASKER
I also am using Outlook Web access and it does not happen on there.
do you have any shared mailboxes in your account? maybe Outlook is actually asking for the password to a different mailbox and not your main one. If another mailbox shows up in Outlook, it would ask for your password even if you don't expand it or use it.
Is there anyway your MAPI Mailbox feature got turned off in ESM?
ASKER
I used to have shared inboxes but I no longer have them, since I am using a new Outlook and Windows profile.
ASKER
@Stu29 How do I check that?
ASKER
@Stu29, I just checked and it was still enabled.
Maybe try disabling it .. then re-enable it. This is account specific to you by the sounds of it, and not a larger issue, and it sounds like it is MAPI based as you can use OWA.
ASKER
Okay. I will post back here when and if it happens again. Also why would my phone be affected. I started to get a password box on my email on my Note 3. This started about 3 days ago. So I am assuming it is all the same problem, since I get Exchange on my cell phone connecting to the exchange server here at work
when you set up Outlook, does it automatically detect the settings for you and sets everything up, or do you have to enter the server address, your username/email, and your password?
also, has your web mail site URL changed in the last few weeks?
also, has your web mail site URL changed in the last few weeks?
ASKER
On my computer it auto detects and sets up everything for me. No, nothing has changed.
ASKER
I disabled and reenable MAPI and I still have the problem.
try setting up a new outlook profile by going to the control panel and then clicking on "Mail." In the new window, hit "Show Profiles..." and then hit "Add..." In the wizard, click the second option to enter your information manually, and then use the second radio button "Outlook.com or Exchange ActiveSync compatible service" and enter in all your information.
if that works, then perhaps your mail servers changed behind the scenes, which kept your mail URL stayed the same, but the autodiscover.xml hasn't been updated correctly. it's pointing to the same servers that worked before, but not the new ones, so it connects fine, but can't make the changes to say you're logged onto the server. your webmail works because the URL is pointing to the correct server already

You have not answered my qn, which service/server is requesting credentials on the credential prompt.
ASKER
I ran the Outlook connectivity test and is connecting to my exchange server.
ASKER
When I try to create a new profile, I get a message that Outlook is not connected to the Exchange Server and won't connect, so I went back to the old profile.
ASKER
Now I am unable to login to OWA because it won't accept my password. This is crucial.
ASKER
When I restarted my computer I am now able to access OWA.
ASKER
Does anyone have any other ideas?
Create a test user ......
Log on to a computer and verify your test user can access his own mail box, send and receive.
Now give the test user full access permissions to your Mailbox in either EMC or EMS. Wait until your exchange server has processed the change. Once it has .. does your mailbox show up in the test users Outlook? If so does can you open it?
This still leads back to an account issue as it is specific to just you.

I can open my email just fine under the test account. Also for some reason I get a Group Policy Client service failed the logon, access denied, when trying to logon to my computer with a test account. I may have to wipe my computer
ASKER
I logged into another computer and is having the same issue. I believe the problem is with my actual account. How do I fix my login account and not lose all of my email, etc.?
You can re-assign or export to pst and import back on again. Obvioulsy make sure you have a verified backup prior to starting.

Okay, so I would follow these steps to "delete" my mailbox, then how does that fix my account?

I think I want to do the first option. How do I re-link my old account to the new one? I know that mailboxes don't permanently delete for 30 days.
The instructions should be in the link above
ASKER
That link just says how to delete your mailbox.
Point 6 and 7 are what you are looking for
6. Right click on your mailbox and select Reconnect. Select the AD object for your user account.
7. In ADUC, check the Email address tab for your user object and verify all of your SMTP addresses are correct. It will only be stamped with what applies in the recipient policies, so manually added aliases won't appear. Add any necessary addresses.

Okay, when I tried to remove my Mailbox using the Domain Admin login, said that that user had no access. Will I have to log in as myself and remove my mailbox?
ASKER
I ended up creating a new account and connecting my old email to this account through the email profile. So far working good
ASKER
Maybe I spoke too soon. I am still having the same issue with the new account. The problem seems to be in my email and I don't know what else to do. The disconnect doesn't happen as often, but when it does, I find if I rejoin my computer to the domain it works fine as long as my computer stays on. If I just log out, I get the problem again. I don't know the process since this is a closed issue, but I ready to delete everything and start over again.
