iNotes new configuration case

      Hi,
Frankly, I have a  new configuration case not a problem ..................
In short, the company I work for has something between 69 and 80 branches and I would like to find the easiest and best way  to configure the email to avoide  putting some load on the Network since the  configuration we are using puts a lot of load on the Network and consumes  a lot of time using the " replication" utility with the main server . However, I've been told about using  the following :
1-  Using iNotes .
2- Putting the Lotus Notes Databases of the users in the branches servers or worstations
3- Configure the Synchronization between the databases located at the branches and the main servers at the  Head Office  and consuming the least amount of time and least utlization of the network

Finally, If somebody knows anything about this configuration or has any other Suggestion I will be so glad to have it

You could use Notes or Inotes, since the result would be similar once you have a Domino server in the branch, but that would mean adding 69-80 additional local servers.

If you use a web based solution via the internet, and a Domino server on the Internet, that may be a better solution, as long as it is well protected ( DMZ ) and you have sufficient security.

Other options are Internet ad VPN to access the Notes server rather than over your WAN.

I hope this helps !

  Hi Mr. SysExpert,

Let me clearify a point to you ,,,,,,,,,,
A domino server is not needed in the case I've explained above .... In the actually sense the databases will be be placed at some share folders in the File server of each branch and a Synchronization has to be configured in both the Lotus Notes client side and Lotus Notes domino server side ( if possible). Moreover, a web solution through the interanet was tried once and it occupied 97% of the network and finally, an Internet access is not available at the branches for security purposes.

Thank you for your continuous cooperation.
Unfortuantely, you can not use Notes in that manner.
Mail files have to be on a Notes server in order to access them, and to have replication. You can not use a file sever for this.

At the moment it sounds like each user has a local replica and is replicating with the sever.

That is the best situation if you can not use Internet access.
To reduce bandwidth you should consider some options.

1) Limit attachment size - These are usually the bandwidth hogs.
Put any attachments in a shared folder on the servers
2) Replicate every hour, and not every xx minutes

I hope this helps !

If I understand you correctly, you have many (potential) Notes users but you don't have (or you don't want to have) a Domino server. In theory that is possible, but you will have a VERY limited functionality, and in practice NO user will like the solution: it is just unworkable. Multiple users who want to access the same database will have to do that in turns. True Notes replication without a server is impossible, as SysExpert says. If you intend to make copies of databases that are placed on workstations, these copies can NEVER be merged to a full database without intervention of a Domino server.

Now about your company with 80 branches. You cold use one big Domino server managed from your main branch, or you could have 80 (or more) smaller server where every branch has its own server. The optimal solution will lie somewhere in the middle: one main (clustered) server that contains all data, and several smaller servers, e.g. one per region. If it is only mail you're using, the one server will do. If you plan to add CRM-like or sales-support applications, or other dedicated applications with a large volume of data, you might want one or more servers closer to the users.

AFAIK there is (or was) a Lotus-tool to help you decide. Maybe your local Lotus-contact can help you.

     Hi Guys,

Please accept my appreciation for your good and useful contributions. However, I 've found which I think will be usefull in this case .... it is callled DOLS ( Domino Off-Line Services) and frankly I have'nt ever tried it in my real practical life and I would like to be advised about it if it is going to be a useful solution and  I would like to have an Idea about it and How it can be implemented.

Thank a lot
Are you sure that's what you want? A quote from the Help database: "Domino Off-Line Services (DOLS) provides a way for users to take IBM Lotus Domino Release 6 Web applications offline, work in them, and synchronize the changes with an online replica on the Domino server. Users are not required to have IBM Lotus Notes Release 6 client because the applications are accessed with a browser. "

So you need:
- a browser
- good web-enabled Notes databases
- and, ehm, a Domino server...

     Hi there Guys,

Actually, I was able configure the Inotes web server , access it and work off-line  . However still unable to work work with "Lotus Domino Sync Manager" frankly it is installed on my PC but when I start the Sync. process after 5% I get the following message :

" Lotus Domino Sync Task: The application for this subscription did not finish initializing. you will need to reissue synchronization before going offline"
And I found the following suggested causes on the net:

The problem occurs with the following configuration:

1-  The server is set with the offline policy "Prompt for ID"
*  I have clicked perferences - Security TAB -Import UserID and I imported the userID and it avoided asking the question of "select a UserID" duiring the installation of a new Sync. Manager.
But, Does this solve the problem as suggested??

2- The database (extended mail) is set in the OCD for encryption.
* I really want to be informed how I can check this point

3- The user downloading the database has a different Internet and Notes password.
* I am sure both of them are I dentical.

Can you please help in this case.

Thanks
Is there an error logged in DOL.LOG ??

   Hi sjef,

Thanks a lot for your continuous cooperation and for the good link you provided me with . the problem was that I have added all goups , administrators and servers  to the Server Access in "correct server" under "all servers documents" not under the " Current Server document".

Thanks

Ah. Well, eh, great, but... you mention two views, but those views should show the same documents. If it works for you, so much the better!
