I would not do clustering with anything less than R 6.5x
There were too many issues in previous versions.

Issues ? Not really - you must be well aware that it can go wrong, and you always need a good replication schedule to back your clustering setup.
There is however a good reason to not cluster your R5 servers, and that's 'support'. It's no longer supported offically, so you should move to R6.5 or 7.
Setting up clustering for the Notes client is very easy - use the "Add to cluster" button in the names.nsf for the servers you want to cluster and you're done basically.
