What operating system?  I found the visual ones didn't work in Windows 2000.  The audio notifications work well in both 2000 and XP, but you have to choose a sound from the list, and when you click the test, it should sound.  Now, if you have your sounds muted, you won't hear it. :)

The popup notification is modal - meaning you can't do anything else until you click OK.

However, Notes also installs with NotesMinder, which sits in the task bar.  To turn it on, select START>>Programs>>Lotus>>NotesMinder.  This one will pop up a message just like MSN messenger.   I have mine set to load in the Computer Startup.

locally. Within our domain. Means same subnet.

The location document, and restarting the client have little to do with the notification process.  This process attaches to the operating system on the client, and uses those sounds and sound card capabilities.  

What might prevent the "popup" is your email browser, or your firewall.  Or whatever application is running in the foreground:

Like I said, I found the popup notification to be intrusive, and opted for NotesMinder, or the audio alert.

Are you choosing Audio or visual ( or both )  ?

Have you checked the audio and sound through the speakers is OK ?

I choose both option.  

In the 6.5 Notes client enabling "show a popup" option in user preferences should work without loading notes minder. I am confused here with notes minder. Why do we need notes minder? Should we enable notes minder in order to show pop up.

No, you don't need to load notes minder to show the popup.   What operating system?

Deleting the NewMailSeqNum references in the notes.ini seems to do the trick.  Although, replication and shared computers might be problematic.
