basically the boss wants to put in a date range FromDate ToDate and wants to see only the docs that fall in that range. It can't be this difficult!

I've looked this up and have found some solutions but I can't get any of them to work for me. Here it is I have a view that has documents with due dates, I need to be able to pick a select about of dates i.e. FromDate-Todate then display those documents. And you don't want a calendar view? You get the subset for free there, and the user can even define the period he wants to see...
Is this for a permanent view? Then use a selection formula.
Or do you want more flexibility, by modifying FromDate and ToDate? Then use db.Search (or FTSearch), and maybe a private Folder to put all documents in. Or a NotesNewsletter, but then it won't be a view any more.
