Question

LotusNotes Migration From 6.5.5 to 8.0.2

Asked by: Fauzanyousuff

We have a lotus notes upgrade project running.
We have automated 8.0.2 pakage which upgrades 6.5.5 or any other previou version installed.
and the upgrade installation is succesfull.
How ever while a new 8.0.2 is launched its prompts for Reconfiguring the lotus notes by providing user.id, Mail server details etc as if its installed for a new user.
The 8.0.2 has data folder under the follow directory after reconfiguration information is provided.
C:\Program Files\IBM\Lotus\Notes\Data
The 6.5.5 Data Directory is under:
C:\Documents and Setting\Current User\Local Setting\Application Data\Lotus\Notes\Data.
Which is deleted after the 8.0.2 installation.
Is there a way where this re-configuration avoided, as its hectic task for going to thousnads of of user machine and reconfigure.
The deployment is done through a deployment tool.

   Hi there Fauzanyousuff.

Lotus notes is usually installed on the path of "C:\Program Files\IBM\Lotus\Notes\Data" but as long as the old installation was performed on another path
"C:\Documents and Setting\Current User\Local Setting\Application Data\Lotus\Notes\Data." lotus notes8.0.2 will treat it as a new user that's why it is prompting the configuration and user.id configuration for each and every user . However, I would have recommended that installation must have been performed the installation on the same path or I regret to inform you that the Lotus notes Client must be performed for each and every user independently

Best Wishes

The Lotus Notes 6.5.5 has the install Dir as C:\Program Files\Lotus after IBM took over it became C:\Program Files\IBM\Lotus\Notes, with data files at C:\Program Files\IBM\Lotus\Notes\Data

How ever the the data folder for each user for LotusNotes6.5.5  is placed under
 C:\Documents and Setting\Current User\Local Setting\Application Data\Lotus\Notes\Data.
Also the archive setting is done under C:\Data\NotesArchive.

is there a possible soultion to automate for every user that have lotus notes 6.5.5 configured and I install 8.0.2 and the users can use it without reconfiguring.

by: SysExpertPosted on 2009-10-08 at 10:56:46ID: 25528131

copy the old data dir to the new one before the install starts, perhaps as part of a batch file

I hope this helps !

Hi, if your data folder has become
C:\Program Files\IBM\Lotus\Notes\Data

instead of under the user profile as was with 6.5.5, then you must be installed the AllUser client.  The MultiUser client of 8.0.2 is still under the user profile.

So, with the AllUserClient, before uninstalling 6.5.5, back up the Notes.ini, names.nsf, bookmarks.nsf, user.dic, and .id files.

When you have installed 8.0.2, restore those files to C:\Program Files\IBM\Lotus\Notes\Data
Edit the Notes.ini to replace the User Profile path references with C:\Program Files\IBM\Lotus\Notes\Data

You may also need to change
HKCU\Software\Lotus\Notes\8.0\NotesIniPath
to point to C:\Program Files\IBM\Lotus\Notes\Data\Notes.ini

Try and test that with a manual process first, and see how it goes.

Regards,

Rob.

I guess thats a good suggestion, However I have no clue as how to perform the above tasks. I have the lotus notes 8.0.2 set up, and I have no clue how to automate the install to back up all the logged in users data and the have the 6.5.5 installed and then install 8.02.

by: RobSampsonPosted on 2009-10-09 at 04:07:44ID: 25533802

Maybe it's best not to look at automation just yet....we need to be sure what works manually first.  The above steps worked in my environment for an R5 to R8 rollout, but it may not work with you.  If you could create a manual "road map" of what needs doing, then we can follow those steps for automation.

Regards,

Rob.

Hi there, here's a script which may go some of the way to automating this for you. What it does:
1) backs up files from
"C:\Documents and Settings\" & strUserName & "\Local Settings\Application Data\Lotus\Notes\Data"
to
"C:\Temp\R6DataBkp\Data"

2) Attempts to uninstall R6

3) Installs R8 Client

4) Restores files from
"C:\Temp\R6DataBkp\Data"
to
"C:\Program Files\IBM\Lotus\Notes\Data"

There may be other steps required, but you will need to tell me what else is required.

Rob.

Can u suggest as how to have the data directory of 8.0.2 same as that of 6.5 where the configuration data is readily available for 8.0.2 when its launched.

And having the installation folder as C:\IBM\Lotus\Notes.
and uninstalling 6.5.5 without removal of the data folder in the user dir.

by: SysExpertPosted on 2009-10-28 at 12:58:16ID: 25687566

Notes uninstall does not remove data usually ( may be an option )

you might want to try tricking Notes by changing the registry and notes.ini to point to the directories you want for installation.

I hope this helps !

by: RobSampsonPosted on 2009-10-28 at 19:27:50ID: 25690178

If you want the 8.0.2 data folder to be the same as 6.5 (ie %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Lotus\Notes\Data) then you must install the Multi-User client of 8.0.2, not the All-User client.  This can be set at the command line. The Program File locations can also be set at the command line.  This command will install the Multi-User client, with Lotus Symphony, and specific install folders.

setup.exe /s /V"SETMULTIUSER=1 SELECTINSTALLFEATURES=Editors PROGDIR=C:\IBM\Notes DATADIR=C:\IBM\Notes\Data /qb"

Note that the DataDir is ignored with Multi-User, as it sets up %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Lotus\Notes\Data anyway.

Regards,

Rob.

Hi, to back up the files to the Home Drive, you can use something like this (it's a batch file).

mkdir %homedrive%\Notes
copy %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Lotus\Notes\Data\names*.nsf %homedrive%\Notes\names*.nsf
copy %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Lotus\Notes\Data\*.id %homedrive%\Notes\*.id
copy %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Lotus\Notes\Data\Bookmark.nsf %homedrive%\Notes\Bookmark.nsf
copy %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Lotus\Notes\Data\Desktop5.dsk %homedrive%\Notes\Desktop5.dsk
copy c:\notes\notes.ini %homedrive%\Notes\notes.ini
if exist %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Lotus\Notes\Data\mail\*.nsf mkdir %homedrive%\notes\mail
copy %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Lotus\Notes\Data\mail\a_*.nsf %homedrive%\notes\mail\a_*.nsf
copy %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Lotus\Notes\Data\mail\l_*.nsf %homedrive%\notes\mail\l_*.nsf
if exist %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Lotus\Notes\Data\archive\*.nsf mkdir %homedrive%\notes\archive
copy %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Lotus\Notes\Data\archive\a_*.nsf %homedrive%\notes\archive\a_*.nsf
copy %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Lotus\Notes\Data\archive\l_*.nsf %homedrive%\notes\archive\l_*.nsf
copy %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Lotus\Notes\Data\user.dic %homedrive%\notes\user.dic
pause

Then you would install R8, then run this to restore the files

copy %homedrive%\Notes\bookmark.nsf %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Lotus\Notes\Data\bookmark.nsf
copy %homedrive%\Notes\names*.nsf %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Lotus\Notes\Data\names*.nsf
copy %homedrive%\Notes\*.id %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Lotus\Notes\Data\*.id
copy %homedrive%\Notes\Desktop5.dsk %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Lotus\Notes\Data\Desktop5.dsk
copy %homedrive%\Notes\notes.ini c:\notes\notes.ini
if exist %homedrive%\notes\mail\*.nsf mkdir %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Lotus\Notes\Data\mail
copy %homedrive%\notes\mail\a_*.nsf %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Lotus\Notes\Data\mail\a_*.nsf
copy %homedrive%\notes\mail\l_*.nsf %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Lotus\Notes\Data\mail\l_*.nsf
if exist %homedrive%\notes\archive\*.nsf mkdir %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Lotus\Notes\Data\archive
copy %homedrive%\notes\archive\a_*.nsf %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Lotus\Notes\Data\archive\a_*.nsf
copy %homedrive%\notes\archive\l_*.nsf %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Lotus\Notes\Data\archive\l_*.nsf
copy %homedrive%\notes\user.dic %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Lotus\Notes\Data\user.dic
pause

Then, when you run the R8 client, it should pick up the user files.  The INI file may need a slight modification though....

Regards,

Rob.

Thanks so much,

I'm sorry, I don't quite follow the sequence of events that you're after.  Is R8 already installed at this point?  Usually what you would do is
1. Backup the user files to the Home Drive
2. Uninstall R6.5
3. Install R8
4. Restore files from the Home Drive to the local user profile

Is that what you need?

Rob.

by: FauzanyousuffPosted on 2009-11-05 at 21:56:28ID: 25756888

I would like to have a user data back up in Home:\ , in case if there is a user who logs in multiple machines, and the user can have launch Lotus Notes without re - configuration.
The Notes should be able to pick up data from the Home:\ Network Drive.
This wil also solve the Multi User using single machine.

Thanks

by: RobSampsonPosted on 2009-11-05 at 22:15:36ID: 25756958

As of R8.0.2 I haven't been able to get Lotus Notes to pick up the data files from a network drive, so I can't really help you with that bit.  I think you're best bet would be to run the Backup batch file as a Logoff script, and the Restore batch file as a Logon script.

You could put in the file a check for which version is installed on the computer being logged into, if you need to.

Regards,

Rob.

by: FauzanyousuffPosted on 2009-11-06 at 01:01:57ID: 25757648

Thanks for all ur help Rob,
We need Notes to pickup from Home Drive and put into Data folder of Notes ie C:\IBM\Lotus\Notes\data when ever user logs into lotusnotes icon and when logs off over write the info in the Home:\ back from C:\IBM\Lotus\Notes\data

by: RobSampsonPosted on 2009-11-06 at 02:36:28ID: 25757978

In that case, my previous post should work.  Here's what would happen:
1) A logon script would run Restore script that I posted above when the user logs on, which would happen before they launch Lotus Notes
2) Because the files are "restored" to the Notes Data folder of the local PC, Notes would use those for that user.
3) The user closes Lotus Notes, and when they log off, the Backup batch file would run, backing up the C Drive data to their home drive again.

The only thing you would need to make sure of is that the file paths are right in the scripts.

Regards,

Rob.

Thank You So Much!
One last help, How can I get Admin and Designer Feature get installed along with the client.
I mean is there any command line to do so or should I get a new build from IBM for this.

There are two version of the 8.0.2 installatoin.  There is the Multi-User client installation, which does not include the Administrator and Designer clients, and there is the All-User client, which does include the Administrator and Designer clients, but does not allow the "multi-user" approach of saving each user's data files in their own profile.  The All-User client works the same as the way R5 or below did, where everyone's data is in the one folder.

Anyway, with the Notes All-User client, you should be able to run:
setup.exe /s /V"SETMULTIUSER=0 SELECTINSTALLFEATURES=\"Domino Administrator\",\"Domino Designer\",Editors PROGDIR=C:\IBM\Notes DATADIR=C:\IBM\Notes\Data /qb"

Regards,

Rob.
