Question

Lotus email and VPN

Asked by: ping_it

If using the IP address 192.168.5.101 everything works fine.

When I connect to VPN lotus stops working. I attach the error message. it says that the server is not responing, to contact the admin...

When I connect to VPN, I get the VPN IP address which is 192.168.5.2, same range, but this is a remote network, not local.

But lotus notes tries to connect using the first IP address (192.168.5.101) instead of using 192.168.5.2 as all the other applications do.

Please tell me what needs to be changed. Maybe some settings on Lotus? On VPN? Maybe the lotus server is not accepting the IP address of the VPN connection?e

The answer is in this sentence, I hope: apparently, your server is known by multiple IP-addresses from different locations.

- create a copy of your current Location document (I assume it's "Office", and call it "Office (per VPN)"
- create a copy of the connection document for the server
- the original connection document should be available only when in the location Office
- the copy only when at "Office (per VPN)", and give it the right IP-address that you have per VPN

All you have to do when you switch on the VPN is to select a different location in the bottom-right corner of your Notes window.

the current and usual location is On Line as you can see from the screenshot.

To create a copy of it, no problem I can do it.
But... what is the "connection document" you are talking about? Where to find it and how to copy it?

How to "explain" Lotus to use a determinate IP/connection from those settings that I should edit? I also attach the settings screenshots.

If I copy it, the settings will be the same...

Using the Preferences is sometimes too difficult. It is better to open your N&A-book directly (names.nsf), Open Contacts, or from the Workspace. Click on Advanced and you'll see Locations and Connections.

You specify in a Connection in which Location it will be available. So one connection to the server should be available in your On-line location, and the other in your new location.

Another screenshot for you... I don't know how to go on...

In the connections I can see the connections... yes, but what to do there? Can you please explain step by step?

If I have to specify something there, I can see the symbol *... which means that it is available to all the locations, no?

Please help

Sorry, I didn't see your post, sometimes I miss mails...

Yes, the * means that it's available everywhere, but that's exactly what you do NOT want. There should be 1 connection available for the standard location (with one IP-address) and another connection for the other location (with the vpn-IP-address).

Hello,
I decided indeed to not close this question and not grant points at all.
You helped me, probably what you told me is good, but it doesn't work.

One reason for this is that the Lotus server doesn't accept connection from the outside thus connecting to the vpn from the office to the outside it is not possible to connect.

Then the vpn configuration needs to be changed so that lotus traffic will be bypassed.

by: sjef_bosmanPosted on 2009-11-06 at 05:13:01ID: 25758758

Does it respond to ping via the internal network and address? Are other systems pingable via VPN?
You may be right that it is just a router/gateway problem...
