Inbound message attachments showing up as MS executables, i.e., wordicon.exe, cagicon.exe -- not Virus related

Background:  We use MessageLabs for inbound email scanning, which stops the vast majority of spam and almost every virus email coming to us (they missed something like 10 emails in the past 6 years, and alerted us to all of them immediately).  In addition, we do not allow inbound executable attachments.  All pretty standard.

When an inbound executable is received, it's stopped at the gate and I get a copy.  Recently, I've been seeing a number of emails that should contain legit, ordinary Word docs, but instead, they are showing up -- and being stopped -- as attached executables.

The most common one I've been seeing is "wordicon.exe," which to my understanding should be the icon FOR Word, not a Word attachment.  I have no idea what version of Word these senders may be using -- it could be anything from 3.1 to 2007.  Does anyone know why we are seeing this?

We are a Notes 6.5.5 shop, but that's never been a problem before.Start Free Trial
