nell1 - are you still there?
Main Topics
Browse All TopicsI have a lotus 123 file that when I open in Smartsuite 97, comes up with the error;
"Out Of Memory - Close Applications that you are not using - Choose File, Save As and save your file using another filename. Close the file and exit 123".
This error appears as soon as I try and open the file.
The file I am trying to open is about 280kb an contains formulas. I have loads of memory free and 123 is the only application that I am running.
Have re-installed 123 but get the same error. Have tried other reducing the number of fonts.. same error.
Have been to the lotus site but can find no solution.
Anyone had a similar experience or knows how to over come this?
Running on Win98 by the way.
Many thanks in advance!!
Nell

Hi patrickab2,
Apologies for no response and thankyou for the response, been away. Running Win98, cannot find Task Manager to view processes.
I've had a look at other processes running in terms of background programs, none of these appear to be too ram intensive. I have tested by shutting down all non-essential programs and running 123 almost on its own.. still errors. I have other programs that I am sure use more ram, such as photoshop, and they seem to cope fine.
Good to hear you're still around!
Does it make any difference according to the file size you create? If your pc can cope with Photoshop it should cope with Lotus123 without problem. Re-installing doesn't work - are you sure you stripped out everything before re-installing. Why not try re-installing a 'minimum' copy - that might give you some clues as to what is happening. Is it possible that it is loading lots of help files and the multi-media help stuff?
By the way do you have enough space on your hdd to run this application. You will need enough to cope with the swap file and then something. Check that you have set the swap file so that it is large enough to cope with whatever you are running. You can access it by start/settings/system/perf
Re-boot and see if it copes better.
Shortage of memory problems can often be traced back to the swap file size.
If it doesn't work go back to the virtual memory box and select manual and specify a location on one of your logical drives where there is sufficient space for say 150Mb size of swap file. There also needs to be space to spare as well. Set it, save it and re-boot.
Hope this helps.
Let us know how you get on.
Merry Christmas
Good to get your response but sorry to learn that you still have the problem with the Lotus123 file.
Is it possible that another file of the same name has been created using for example a word processor. If this has happened then Lotus123 will not open it. It is certainly worth trying to open the file using other software - including your normal WP as well as Windows WordPad etc. If you can open it you may well be able to save it as a text file (.txt). You will probably need to actually type a file name and then .txt at the end like - filename.txt - of course making sure you have specified a text file format to save it to. Lotus 123 will open .txt files automatically and will ask you how you want to treat the data - provided they have the externsion .txt If you can get this far it will be worth experimenting until you get it to parse the data correctly so that it is in a Lotus123 usable format.
You might be able to open the file using 'Edit'. You may not even be aware you have this on your system (hopefully it was installed at the same time as OS). Access Edit by Start/Run/Edit where you type the word Edit into the Run dialogue box. It is a DOS based program so don't be surprised. It is pretty basic but it can be very useful. Certainly worth a try.
Good luck.
Try this,
Open a new workbook, then go to File, Open, and select the file with the problem. Then select "Combine with current workbook" tick box bottom left in the "Open" pane.
This should import the file into the view.
Resave the file, ideally using a different name. You could also try opening into Excel, should the filter be installed. Then copy and paste.
This is a known issue with 123. Tech Support should give you the answers.
Hi Nell!
Hope you have resolved your problem. If not you might want to try these options:-
(1)See if reinstalling the printer driver works. It is possible that the printer drivers are corrupted hence causing the problem.
(2)Try to run Scandisk on your PC. There may be corrupted or missing sector on which your file is residing.
(3)Try increasing the Virtual Memory size
BTW are you having problem with this particular file or all the Lotus 123 files? If it is this particular file then there is a possibility of it being corrupted. You might want to try PilgrimCLP suggestion.
All the best.

In an attempt to find out what is going on try right mouse clicking on the blank area of the task bar. A small menu should appear - select Task Manager. In task manager you should be able to see what else is running and how much memeory is being used. Report your findings on this forum and sit back for responses - you'll get plenty! Someone will be able to spot what the problem is provided you give enough info.
My guess is that you have a whole raft of other programs running in the background and that the machine actually has run out of RAM. Still let's not pre-judge let's have the info.
I am assuming by the way that you have sufficiant memory for such a small spreadsheet - be difficult not to!
