Question

Unable to open Lotus 123 Spreadsheet file with *.123 extension

Asked by: communibus

I have a Lotus 123 spreadsheet which had three years work on it and was approximately 16mbs in size. My wife was taken ill and I had to call an ambulance. In my anxiety I switched the computer off rather than shut it down. When I returned to my computer a week later it ran Scandisk before starting windows and reported two faulty files. The computer then booted into Windows 98 SE normally. I tried to load my 123 file which seemed to load successfully. I then ran Scandisk again which reported that my 123 file and a file that was named with a load of numbers were cross linked. Because my 123 file had loaded correctly I told Scandisk to correct the problem which it did by creating *.chk files.

Since the "correction" Lotus wont open the file. I have tried Excel but my version doesnt recognise *.123 workbook extensions. Microsoft Works Wordprocessor is the only program that will open the file but it creates over 50,000 pages. I have tried copying and pasting the file into Lotus but it wont paste although it will paste into Wordpad as gibberish. I have used Norton Disk Editor and can read the file or part of it but the file that was crosslinked to it turned out to be emails from Outlook Express which are attached to the end of my file. I copied the file via Norton and tried to paste it into Lotus using both paste options but Lotus in Lotus the paste options are greyed out. I know it was silly to just switch the computer off but I really was  very worried about my wife. Any help that you can offer me will be very gratefully received.

Regards
Graham

It may well be a matter of experimentation to crack it. I think you should try opening it with WordPro or AmiPro (Lotus wordprocessors). At least that way you should gain access to the data even if it is a bit of a mess and take a lot of work to re-construct your spreadsheet.

Try opening it with Notepad - then copy and paste into a new spread sheet.

Patrick
I dont know whether I'm doing this right. I did reply to your answer stating that I had used ZTREE PRO to copy the file to the clipboard. I can paste it to notepad which expands to wordpad because of the files size. As I said in my initial question I cant paste it to 123 because the paste option "greys out". Wordpro wont open the file in any shape or form. Microsoft Works wordprocessor is the only program to open the file or allow it  to be pasted but it creates thousands of pages.

I did accept your initial reply even though it didnt work but it hasnt closed the question down. How do I just close it

Regards

Apologies for not replying much much earlier.

Have you tried opening the file using Wordpad (not Word) copying and then pasteing it using CTRL-V instead of attempting to use the paste button.

If you want to close the question you can either accept one of the answers or if it hasn't answered your question you should be able to close the question without awarding any points.

I'm not sure this will cure your problem but you can open the .123 file in this viewer then cut & paste into Excel.

Sorry for my delay in replying. I have downloaded the file but as yet still cannot open the file. I have used Ztree pro to read and copy the file with the intention of pasting it in to .123 or Word 2000 but for some reason when I attempt to paste it into either program the paste option is greyed out. Hopefully I may be able to "persuade" the file you suggested to help some other way.

Many thanks
