As one of Bruintje's links probably says, a method that often works
is to open the file in Excel 2002 (Office XP). As I see it, the main
reason to upgrade to Excel 2002 is it's ability to open and repair
damaged files.
If you have Office XP installed somewhere, try opening the file on
that machine. Alternatively, post the file to a public website and
give us a link here, so that an Expert can try to repair it for you.
