Question

Seperate sheet pattern change macro using a reference cell

Asked by: nswentland

Experts,

Please help me on another excel question.  I have a report due tomarrow, and I am trying my best to get it done.  As you can see from the below code I am TRYING to test weither "CLASSES!C5" has any info in the cell.  If it does NOT then the cell range "FLOW_CHART!C3:E7" on another sheet is light gray.  If someone enters data in the cell "CLASSES!C5" then the cells on "FLOW_CHART!C3:E7" will become solid or white.

I also keep getting an error, "application defined or object defined error (1004)".

Private Sub Test()
    If Range("CLASSES!C5").Value = "" Then
        Range("FLOW_CHART!C3:E7").Interior.Pattern = xlPatternGray25
    Else
        Range("FLOW_CHART!C3:E7").Interior.Pattern = xlSolid
    End If
End Sub

Please help,
Nathaniel

Try to add the workbook object before referring to the worksheet or better, also refer to the worksheet explicitly:

Private Sub Test()
    If Workbooks("MyWorkbook.xls").Worksheets("CLASSES").Range("C5").Value = "" Then
        Workbooks("MyWorkbook.xls").Worksheets("CLASSES").Range("C3:E7").Interior.Pattern = xlPatternGray25
    Else
        Workbooks("MyWorkbook.xls").Worksheets("CLASSES").Range("C3:E7").Interior.Pattern = xlSolid
    End If
End Sub

calacuccia,

Thanks for the input, the code works great if I only use it once.  If I try to change the reference cell again then "FLOW_CHART!C3:E7" will not change.  Is there a way that when ever the reference cell changes then pointer cells will change also?

You might beable to avoid the problem by using conditional formatting.

create the name "testRange" and define it as

=CLASSES!C5

then set conditional formatting in FLOW_CHART!C3:E7

with the formula =testRange<>""

(You're not supposed to be able to set conditional formatting with references to another sheet, but you can do it by naming the range.)

Do you want the event of any change in cell C5 to trigger the change of C3:E7 automatically?

>Do you want the event of any change in cell C5 to trigger the change of C3:E7 automatically?

Yes when ever someone enters a value into C5, then C3:E7 will change, but if the value for C5 goes back to "" then C3:E7 will have a shade pattern.

Conditional formatting will do that (without a macro).

remakl,

How can conditional formating work with seperate worksheets?  This is what I have been trying.  I just learning how to use macros last night so please be patient.

Sub Worksheet_Change(ByVal Target As Excel.Range)
    For Each c In Worksheets("FLOW_CHART").Range("C3:E7")
    If Worksheets("CLASSES").Range("C5").Value = "" Then
        Worksheets("FLOW_CHART").Range("C3:E7").Interior.Pattern = xlPatternGray25
    Else
        Worksheets("FLOW_CHART").Range("C3:E7").Interior.Pattern = xlSolid
    End If
Next c
End Sub

Did you try this?

Create the name "testRange" and define it as

=CLASSES!C5

then set conditional formatting in FLOW_CHART!C3:E7

with the formula =testRange<>""

If you give me your email address, I'll send you a workbook with the thing done (only I use a yellow background instead of the crosshatch).
