"Calculating cells" message

My Excel VBA mini app that we use at the office has lately started doing a couple of unusual things that I don't understand. This question is about one of them.

Sometimes when I open the workbook, I get an hour glass cursor and a message at the bottom that says "Calculating cells: xx%" (the xx is the percentage of completion counter). After some 5 to 10 seconds the percentage counter reaches 100% and everything seems to work normally. If I save the workbook at that point, close it and reopen it, the "recalculating" message does not reappear. Later in the day though, at some point it comes back and I have to do the save again to fix the annoying message and wait.

Can anyone explain what is going on here? I would like to understand this behavior to see if there is anything I can do differently from the design point of view to avoid the issue altogether.
