which version of excel?
I remember the problem arising long ago, and i remember being able to cancel that behavior on some machines (only) by pressing a specific key... can't remeber which one. Maybe Shift, Esc, Ctrl, Insert, or Delete (but i was not an alphanumerical key). On some computers, as Kevin stated, it required applying updates.

I remember a co-worker on an IBM laptop had a problem with this as well. I can't remember if she had access to the menus or not. I was able to resolve it each time, by just clicking the right then the left mouse button a bunch of times in sequence. I do remember that it was an intermitent problem and didn't occcur at statup though.

This problem has come up before and the resolution was to apply any updates to your installation.
