chk if u r trying to open from shortcut.
u can right click on the xls file and click properties to find the file location

I am unable to open excel files by clicking it directly in my explorer, excel opens but not the file! Thanks for your help

you might try to change the settings in excel
1. open excel
2. goto: menu: tools>>options>>general tab
3. uncheck: ingnore other applications
