I have a template excel sheet in which i fill it from asp.net web application,my question is how to make this excel read only,i mean protecting it from the user to write in it after he downloads it and is it possible to add user name and password,if so then how?

However be under no illusion if you have users who are determined hackers they will be able to crack the password. The reason is that there is publicly available Excel password cracking software available on the net. If you believe your users are not that ingenuous or determined than the Excel password system should be enough.
If you want to make the file read only without a password you could also RightClickonStart/Explore find the file, highlight it, RightClick select Properties and select the ReadOnly option, press Apply and then OK. However this is a well known method and most computer users will know how to overcome this!
There is a way to make your file Read-only.
Perform the following steps.
1. Open Windows Explorer
2. Open the file folder where your data resides. For Example C:\my documents
3. Right click on the file that you want to make Read-only.
4. Click on Properties
5. Go the the bottom where it says attributes.
6. Click on Read-Only.
7. Click OK.
People will be able the see the spreadsheet; use the spreadsheet; and make changes. But, they will not be able to overwrite the file with the changed data.
They will have to save it to another file name to save their data. But your file will never be overwritten.
