Error Message
.xls could not be found. check the spelling of the file name, and verify that the location is correct. if  you are trying to open the file from your list of most ......

Process:
So, there are many exel files we connect to on a share through vpn.
Recently have tested 3 seperate xp clients connecting thru vpn  to share and seems almost everyfile double click to open the above error message displays.

Testing Completed:
Open any files on share that are more than 6 characters and the error message above shows. Copy the file from share to local machine and if more than 6 characters it can be opened. On the share change any excel files to less than 7 characters in length and the file opens okay.

Have looked at ee for the error message as well as microsoft. the soilutions, changing the reg and also going to file types change %1 or whatever it was, did nto solve the problem. We have connected to this share for 8 months.

There is a path length limit in Windows of somewhere between 218 and 260 characters depending on how you are accessing the file. How are you opening the file? What is the full path to the file when it is on the share drive?

path length is 207 which inludes spaces not including name of file. file name can be around 10 to 30 characters which include spaces

opening thru ie browser either by copying full path or by traversing folders to get to files

but that is probably the longest length. some of the sub directories are less that 200 total and still same problem.

You are definately getting close to the lower limit which I know causes problems in Excel. If I assume that you are not including the .xls extension in your file name length then the actual maximum file name length you can open is 10 characters (6 + 1 + 3) which is 217 characters. I have personally experienced problems using path lengths 218 and greater when opening files from within Excel.

I'm afraid you are going to have to reorganize your folder hierarchy and/or shorten your folder names. You might also consider talking to your IT department and seeing if they can map a drive at a point lower in the folder hierarchy. Other than that there is no known workaround.

I just ran some tests to make sure my numbers were correct. I created a series of folders, one inside the other, that, along with the file name and extension, created a path length of exactly 217, 218, and 219 characters. The files resulting in a total path length of 217 and 218 characters opened in Excel. When I tried to open the file resulting in a path length of 219 characters I get the Excel error:

"full\path\to\file.xls" could not be found. Check the spelling of the file name, and verify that the file location is correct.

This error will occur no matter how you try to open the file.

If you feel that the question has been answered to your satisfaction, even if the answer is not the answer for which you were hoping, then please don't forget to close the question. In looking at your past questions I can see that about half have not been closed - the oldest is from March. And some of those that were closed were done so by the cleanup crews. You have also had a number of questions deleted. Everyone here is a volunteer and our only reward is knowing we have helped and earning some points. The more open and deleted questions you have, the more likely experts will shy away from participating because they don't want to spend time answering a question that may not be closed or might be deleted.

You may not be aware that quite a number of Experts use QuickPost and are able to 'flag' accounts to warn them for whatever reason. This may mean you do not get the answers you need, when you need them. So Kevin's request to close your 15 outstanding questions is not unreasonable.
