Question

Congratulations to our new Master—ampapa

Asked by: byundt

Just before Christmas, ampapa earned a Master certificate in Excel, which will match his earlier one in Visual Basic. After reviewing the questions, I see that the VB certificate was earned in large part through answering Excel VBA questions.

He has been a member since March 1999, and is probably the first Excel certificate holder to have asked more questions than he has answered. I was going to accuse him of never having answered a question with an Excel formula, but did find a couple of examples to the contrary--though one of those was answering his own question http:/Q_21586508.html.

Since ampapa has no EE member profile and sticks to business in the question threads, there is very little that we actually know about him for sure--other than an undeniable skill in Excel VBA. I am guessing that he lives in Kentucky, and runs a web hosting service. He also enjoys simulating old arcade game machines, flying model airplanes and woodworking when he isn't doing VBA.

Some of the more interesting question threads are:
Making Excel invisible http:/Q_20823577.html
What to do when On Error GoTo Errhandler doesn't work: http:/Q_20887167.html
A sorely vexed Matt couldn't select certain worksheets when building a formula: http:/Q_21322784.html

Woohoo ampapa!

Congratulations ampapa and a very happy new year

From your handle I would also assume that you are a father, your significant other works regular hours, and you stay at home in the morning doing fatherly duties.

Time to put something in your profile so we don't have to speculate.

Congratulations!

Kevin

Hi ampapa,

Congratulations on your achievement!  Now, try telling us a bit about yourself :)

Yes, congratulations from me also, Mr Papa.

The first certification in any Topic Area always seems to be the hardest.  Well done! :)

However, Kevin, I'm guessing that the "AM" prefix is for his initials:              <<actual name deleted by byundt>>

Amp apa,

Many congratulations on earning your Master's Certificate here in Excel. I must speculate on what you do, so it is no mistake that I have split your handle. I imagine that Amp implies high energy and apa is The Association of Professional Anglers. I dunno where Brad got the ideas about old arcade games machines, flying model airplanes and woodworking - Nah, can't be right!

So, I reckon you're a 73 year old fisherman! Oh dear, got those digits the wrong way round - perhaps.

Anyhow Happy New Year to you.

Patrick

fanpages,
You were a little more resourceful than I was! I had found the web site (obviously) and an EE thread referencing it http:/Q_20147228.html to confirm the match, but I failed to decode the initials. I'm guessing you went to the web registrar for that tidbit. So I must thank you for teaching me a new trick--I'm sure I'll be using it again.

Since ampapa has been so scrupulous about keeping his name out of both EE threads and his web site, I'm going to scrub the name from your comment. If he doesn't mind it being known, then ampapa can say so in this thread.
Brad

Hi Brad,

I didn't use the "WhoIs" record for ampapa's web site [even given my numerous responses to questions on this topic placed by "finnstone" over the last few months! ;)] as access to the registrar record seemed to be unavailable this morning (UK time).  I simply used Google.

Anybody who searches for "ampapa" can turn up various e-mails addresses that have the username of "vbtalent" (yahoo, gmail, and hotmail), and further cross-referencing returns the forename & surname of the web site owner (that you have now removed) [in addition to the personal interest topics you mentioned in your initial posting].

One specific forum thread referenced ampapa's web site and his middle initial.

I didn't search the E-E PAQs to confirm the web site address, but I'm sure you're right that he's mentioned it previously.

So thanks for the credit for my resourcefulness... but in this case, it was not point-worthy.

:)

BFN,

fp.

And I was satisfied with a guess, albeit incorrect, that took about three seconds.

The *real* question is, given AM's infrequent participation, will he even see this thread? And, without a known email address, how are we going to notify him? Brad?

3 seconds?  Slacker.

I think that's a good point you've raised that could be fed back to E-E for future enhancement of the site.

If anybody specifically references an Expert's username in a question subject title, then an e-mail could be sent to that Expert at their registered e-mail address.  Obviously this would be an "opt in" feature so an Expert with a username of, say, "XL2000", wasn't regularly spammed.

I often see (by chance) follow-up queries for my attention when I'm looking through the entire list of open questions; but I guess a quick message posted in a presently open, or recently closed, question that ampapa was involved within would have the same effect.

BFN,

fp.

Kevin,
I had the same concern over ampapa not noticing the thread, and so sent an invitation earlier this morning to him at the e-mail address he used to register his web site.

The e-mail address that ampapa uses with EE is accessible to Administrators (I think), but definitely not to Page Editors.

Wow! way too much thought has been put into this thread... You all have certainly proven that the internet has no anonymity. I'm going to seriously have to work on that...

I guess it's a record for asking more than I answer on EE??? sweet!!! Is that like worth 500 points or something?? ;)

First off thanks for the recognition, it is certainly most appreciated. :)

My involvement in EE is two fold. Firstly, I get quite a bit of enjoyment out of being able to help someone and give back what I know, which is limited. EE is an excellent means of teaching and learning, terrific concept and implementation hats off to the creators. I've learned much more than I've been able to give (as can be told by my numerous questions in the forums) back from all your posts and excellent problem solving skills which are second to none. I can't compete on most of your levels, I don't know how you remember so much....

Secondly, I'm too cheap to buy into EE to be able too search the excellent answers given at EE, quite amazing they are!

Kevin, you missed the mark on that one I have no kids and work a Finance job at a pizza company (a large one... but not the largest, yet).

fp, actually this is my second cert as I also have one in VB as well... I can't believe you dug all that up and missed the obvious... kudos! The initials are correct and are the prefix to my login the rest was the company name, it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Patrick, I can tell you have a serious sense of humor! age is about right + a couple. I tried fishing but didn't like baiting the hooks and it seemed so senseless to throw them back in the water, I would have preferred to eat them??? Kentuckians were so backwoods oriented...

brad, you're way too smart for Excel... no wonder I'm always in awe of the answers you come up with... extremely resourceful... I mean 3.5MM points, come on...

Thanks for the concern over my lack of participation but just taking a break and enjoying the holiday season and waiting for spring to launch a new plane...

Happy Holidays!!!

Thanks again.

Sincerely,

Adam J. Marx

>Kevin, you missed the mark on that one I have no kids and work a Finance job at a pizza company
I guess I just don't have as much free time as some of these other yahoos. Follow this link: http://www.experts-exchange.com/M_300073.html, click Edit, and type something interesting so Nigel doesn't have to search the world. We need him for real tasks like buggering up the English language for our amusement.

>Is that like worth 500 points or something??
Nope. And they will take away the 20 points for this question.

>I don't know how you remember so much
We don't. Brad is the only one with megamemory - and the only one to actually read the whole question. The rest of us cheat and either use the EE search function (or try to anyway), a database of prefabricated notes, or just rewrite earlier posts by other experts.

I'm presently messing up my E-E answers... allegedly...
