Question

Run Time Error 1004

Asked by: greg_c

Hi

I have a macro the protects and unprotect a workbook.  When I manually unprotect a workbook and try to do something I get the following message:

 "Run Time Error 1004:

The cell or chart you are tryint ot change is protected and therefore read-only.

To modify a protect cell or chart, first remove protection using the Unprotect sheet command( Tools menu, Protection submenu).  You may be prompted for a password"

Would anyone have any ideas why this is happening?

Greg

Sorry I mean worksheet instead of workbook.

Greg,
Do you have a macro that calls the unprotect and protect macros that might be triggered by ordinary cell manipulation (such as through an event sub)? If this is the case, then the worksheet would actually be in its unprotected state--and you would encounter an error message when you try to change a locked cell.

So I wouldn't need to unprotect it manually, is this correct?

Does macro refresh1 run on its own volition? Perhaps in response to data upload being complete or a Worksheet_Change sub? If so, that would explain your symptoms--because refresh1 calls the unprotect and protect subs.

Greg,
"Worked it out" makes it seem as though the solution was something entirely different than had been discussed. What did the problem turn out to be?
Brad

by: greg_cPosted on 2006-10-25 at 05:59:46ID: 17802897

Ended up being something different.  The problem was with the query that was written in the business warehouse, which was being inserted into excel.   But the discussion made me trace my step backwards.
