Question

Congratulations to our new Genius—rorya

Asked by: byundt

It seems like yesterday when I first noticed Rory answering questions. In fact, it was just this past April when he potted a few on his first day belonging to Experts-Exchange. You could tell he was special at the very beginning, because he spoke with confidence and gave excellent advice. After a little prodding, we learned that he also participated as a moderator in some forums at Woody's Lounge--no wonder his comments were so cogent. And here we are 860 answers and a million points later, awarding a well-deserved Genius certificate to him.

Rory started off at a rapid clip, and has kept that pace ever since. Some people suggested Rory might pip Patrick AB to the post, but Patrick was just too close. So Rory gets Genius certificate number 10, and we have Hall of Fame positions 7, 9, 10 & 11 filled by people who live scarcely more than a tube ride apart.

I'll try to add a few more links later, but this first one showed me how to do something I had previously thought quite impossible:
User defined function used in a data validation http:/Q_21979767.html

It's probably hopelessly quaint now, but people in English novels always used to exclaim "Jolly good show!" at times like this. I'd appreciate tips on more current congratulatory phrases, because Rory really has done something special.

Congratulations Rory!

At the start of the year, I thought Jaes was a certainty to get the Rookie of the Year award for Excel. Little did we know that you'd come along!

Even though you are the most likely to the the "Rookie" award, you are miles from being a rookie. You amaze me with some of the things you are able to get Excel to do. I particularly like the UDF in DataValidation in the link from Brad.

Well Done!!

Wayne

Rory,

Although I've said it already, many, many congratulations on achieving your Genius status. I look forward to reading more of your contributions so that I can learn from them.

Keep going, it won't be long before you pass both Dave and me. In fact I reckon that within 6 to 8 weeks you'll be in slot 5 in the Excel ranking.

Thank you all for your kind words! (and apologies to Jaes for stealing his thunder!)
It has been an absolute pleasure to be here and long may it continue. I'm glad to say I've learned probably as much as I've contributed over the last few months - it has been something of an eye-opener just seeing the many and varied uses that people put Excel to on a daily basis. Thinking about some of the questions posted has led me to many new and interesting parts of the object model, and of my own mind!
Most of all, though, I would like to thank you all for making this a fun place to hang out when work and wife permit me to - a large slice of that thanks goes to Brad for oft-repeated reasons (there's a phrase from about the same period as "Jolly good show"! ;-P ) - and here's to the next million!

Well done Rory,
This is a huge achievement, achieving genius within 8 months. I'll bet you will reach the 5th position on the 4th of februari :)

good luck!

Rory,

Back in the Spring I started noticing your name.  And then more.  And it just did not stop.  You kept
up remarkable momentum, hardly ever seeming to slow down.

It was not so long ago that I took a RotY prize here, but my rookie performance should not really
even be mentioned in the same sentence as yours.  (For that matter, my rookie total trails Jaes's
total too!)

You have been a terrific addition to our little community, and you have provided some real gems.  I
am still in awe of your trick to make a UDF work for validation.  Keep up the good work.  Woo-hoo!

As long as we're starting a pool, how about: by what date will the Excel TA have an all-Genius HoF?

Enjoy the pictures,

Patrick

So let me get this straight: I don't get to rest on my laurels at all; instead, you think I'm going to get 350,000 more points by 25th Jan, assuming Matt doesn't get a single point in the meantime?? I'm going to need a lot more coffee!! >8-P
Seriously, thank you all. It's a pleasure being here and I look forward to one day achieving a total equivalent to Kevin or Brad's annual points score!
Rory
PS What are these pictures? Am I missing something?

Congrats, Rory! Very very impressive! Most people need a little time before they get going here, to get used to the style and knowledge level of the forum, and you hit the ground running! The ROTY award will be well deserved.

>you think I'm going to get 350,000 more points by 25th Jan, assuming Matt doesn't get a single point in the meantime?? I'm going to need a lot more coffee

That is a good point.. as I doubt I'll be away from EE for the whole time, I'm going to say Feb 9th, assuming I'll probably get around 50,000 more points by the time you catch up to me

I'll email you a link to the pictures in a minute along with your PW, Kevin must still be sleeping. Probably stayed up too late working on his Screen Dating project

Congrats!
Matt

Oh. My. God. That was certainly an eye-opener!!
Kevin looks nothing like I imagined (even allowing for the fact I thought his references to naked coding were a joke) and it's a very good thing Brad's userpic for this TA was cropped at the shoulders! ;~O You all obviously have some interesting parties...

Brad with the gold lampshade was my favorite one, been trying to get him to use that here on EE for a while now

Hey Brad, when is EE gonna make a cartoon caricature for the new site for you? Last I checked, I think 'mhenry' was listed as the zone advisor or whatever for excel

Sorry about that, I was sleeping.

>and apologies to Jaes for stealing his thunder...
Jaes took his own thunder and got some kind of job or something and had to do some work.

>I'm glad to say I've learned probably as much as I've contributed over the last few months...
Really? I find that a little hard to believe.

>some of the questions posted has led me to many new and interesting parts of the object model, and of my own mind!
Likewise...I'm still playing with this little gem: http://www.experts-exchange.com/Applications/MS_Office/Excel/Q_21987780.html

>I'm going to need a lot more coffee!!
http://www.hotsauceworld.com/wafuupco1l.html

>Oh. My. God. That was certainly an eye-opener!!
The pictures...pretty cool them. Thanks Matt. I just hope they are still up when Harish earns his badge. I've been getting some complaints from the hosting service. Where is Harish anyway? Did he finally get a girlfriend?

Talk about hitting the ground running, Rory hit the milestone in 231 days while the next genius did it in 285 days. After that we have 348, 575, 611, 668, 685, 710, 843, and finally 1,027.

It's one thing to be quick. It's another to be clever. Yet another to be cordial. Rory's work here is well admired and his demeanor very respected. A very nice complement to a great TA.

Brad, you forgot the Woo Hoo!!!

Kevin

>Sorry about that, I was sleeping.
Really? I find that a little hard to believe. ;) I was beginning to wonder if you ever did...

I reckon that data validation filter thing could be turned into an add-in that might be useful, so that may be my next project once the busy season is over at work.

Thanks again, all.

Rory
