Browse All TopicsPatrick has steadily progressed to a second Genius certificate in the Excel TA, and there aren't many people site-wide who can make that claim--most of them having burned out by the effort to get the first certificate. Even more amazing, Patrick is also close to a Genius certificate in Access.
Rather than answering the same questions over and over again, Patrick started earning points in Access, Visual Basic, SQL, Word and Outlook. As a result, he is very proficient at answering questions that involve integrating two Office applications.
When he isn't integrating different applications, he is often deepening our understanding of Excel:

Race is hotting up. A few weeks back I had a dream in which Matthewspatrick and PatrickB were running neck to neck..... Strange obsession with Excel is catching up now. Thanks to you geniouses.
And Patrick, Thanks again for the following. It really solved a lot of mystries for me.

Keep up the Great Job.

Patrick Matthews - what can one say about Patrick...
He is one of the few experts who I have never seen get in a spat. I'm not saying he hasn't, just that I haven't seen one.
He can generate more unusable lines of code than Nigel (although some might argue those lines are necessary to use the other lines of real code and I would have to agree). I couldn't find an example of this code on EE so we have too look here: http://vbaexpress.com/kb/g
Patrick, here is one for your ego: Since seeing some of your more elaborately documented functions I have taken on the task of revisiting my own functions in my KB and rewriting the documentation to be more in line with your style - although not quite as verbose ;-)
He knows every character's name on Battlestar Galactica (and their real life name). Is Starbuck really dead? Wait, this has nothing to do with EE and Excel...sorry...
As far as EE goes Patrick recently made this comment about me in one of my congrats threads: "I've lauded your skills before, so this time I will focus on something different: the way you contribute to our little corner of the EE community. Lots of regulars here have remarked on how the Excel "zone" is a friendly, civil, and supportive place. Brad usually gets a lot of the credit for that, but you are a key contributor in that area too." Given that you were here long before I was and I learned the code of conduct from you, Brad, Jeroen, Sébastien, Jim, Matt, etc., I would have to say you are the better and more consistent influence. So right back at you buddy!
Question for Patrick: How many of your posts has Brad deleted? My guess is none. I have not had many of my own deleted but I know there have been a couple ;-)
On a related but sort of side note, Patrick recently lamented on the recent passing of QP: "At the risk of repeating what hundreds (thousands?) of Experts must have said in the past, without the late, lamented QP I could not have participate in EE at anywhere near the level I had, and since the new site went on line, my EE productivity has plummeted, mainly because the new site doesn't play nice with QP." I could not agree with his feelings more. Here's hoping that someone, anyone, gets some kind of second version QP going sooner versus later so I can enjoy seeing his cool solutions again.
Whoo hoo!

Thanks, Brad! I have been trying to branch out into other areas, and I
take it as a point of pride that I am on track to be the first person to
get Genius certs in more than one Office zone.

Back at you! My accomplishments look meager next to yours. I hope that
I have been able to add at least a bit to your Excel knowledge. I know
you have greatly added to my knowledge of SQL Server and SQL in general.

As if :) I am more concerned right now with keeping Jim and Rory at bay...

Rory, I am very happy I was able to help you expand your knowledge of Excel.
In the short time you've been here, you may have taught me more than I've
taught you!

A dream, or a nightmare?

Thanks, Jeroen! BTW, a funny thing has happened in the Access zone:
somehow I have acquired the reputation for being the "RegExp Guy" over
there. Dave Brett is probably chuckling over that :)

Oh, sometimes I get snippy. Occasionally my mirth detector malfunctions,

Well, to be fair, that is from the VBAX knowledge base, and they have
strict rules that anything you put in the knowledge base has to be
thoroughly documented. Some of my other submissions come with reams
of comments also because they are bits I reuse from solutions I build
at work, and I try to document (most) of my work stuff. At least, I
try to document the stuff I expect will be reused. I tend not to
bother with stuff that's "use once and destroy".
One thing I could definitely learn from Nigel is to be more dilient
about validation and error handling!

Favorite show on TV right now. I liked Farscape even more, though :)

Thank you fo that, Kevin! I try to do my part, but it is work shared
by many hands.

None spring to mind, but there must have been at least a couple :)

Wayne has been steadily enhancing TubbPost, since renamed QuickEE. Once
he gets through another couple of rounds I think I will be among the
happy users!

Glad to hear my contribution has some value!
indeed, I learned alot on EE, including in Excel some neat tricks!
[ I'm late to the party yet again... ]
Well done, indeed, Patrick. Given that you've achieved all this in just over 3 years is incredible, especially with your other contributions to sites such as AccessForums.net & VBAExpress.com.

I often find a useful snippet of code to quote to a question asker from the knowledge base entries you have submitted to VBAExpress, Patrick.. so thanks for that. Your "Regular Expression" submission [ "UDF wrappers for RegExp Find and Replace methods" ] has proved the most quoted so far.

Was that a test for me to spot the spelling error? Very drole! But thanks for the compliment all the same :)

Nigel,
I am flattered to hear that you like my VBAX code submissions to be
valuable enough to brave the colour scheme:

And now I wish I were more "diligent" about my spelling :)
Best regards,
Patrick
:) Don't worry Patrick, I think only I noticed! A spelling-checker may be a good idea for a future release of the E-E site. Didn't QuickPost use to have this facility?
Yes, the 1upGamers forum (where I am the UK Moderator) has a slightly easier-on-the-eye colo[u]r scheme compared to VBAExpress:

I do find the "archive" messages a little too 'basic' though, but it does help if you do not wish to see all the in-comment logos/avatars etc. in the original thread:

With respect to the old Experts-Exchange "in-your-face" 'hey, look at me, I'm not working... again' banners, I used the Mozilla Firefox Add-on "Adblock Plus" (by Wladimir Palant) to remove whole sections of HTML that had the added advantage of the site pages loading much faster.

(I have mentioned this previously in our "Regulars [#3]" PAQ thread)
I'm so not taken by VBAExpress, that I haven't even bothered to apply the same here, but I never thought of the
Now, if only there were a similar filter to remove all new E-E site content... :)
Oh wait, I never thought of looking at the "Stylish" Add-on [ https://addons.mozilla.org

I'll have to look into this.
Great! Something else to do! Woo-and-indeed-hoo.
