Excel 2007 slow to open files
We are slowly rolling out Office 2007 and have been experiencing problems with th eslow opening of spreadsheets in Excel 2007. We did have the problem that when you double click a xls or xlsx file it could take upto 1min to open but that seems to have been fixed by doing the following the procedure below.
However when double clicking an Excel attachment in Outlook it is still taking an awfully long time to open.
Application Explorer
Menu Tools
Menu item Folder Options
Tab File Types
List item XLS
Button Advanced
List item Open
Button Edit...
In the dialog box that appears you need to make two adjustments:
Application to Perform Action:
At the end of the line, replace /e with "%1" (including the quotes)
DDE-Application not active:
Insert new text: [rem see command line] (including the brackets)

I have this also on a few of my 200 already migrated computers.
All the same config or with some minor changes.
Happens randomly regardless of those changes.
Tried all steps mentionned in this thread without any success

If adding the add-ins doesn't work, I found that If I Immediately minimize the excel window by clicking the - in the upper right, it immediately closes and then reopens the window with the file opened. Goofy.
likewise i found adding the add in lookup wizard seems to have fixed this fault..
Doesnt appear to make any sense because we now have about 200 users on office 2007 and this only seems to have affected a minority with no obvious reasons.

I also have this same issue with Excel 2007 taking forever to open and none of the aforementioned fixes seem to work.
I tried activating a few of the Excel Add-Ins as described by mastman and that worked very well for me. Excel loads quickly now when opening notebooks both from the local hard drive and on a network share. The environment was Windows XP Pro and MS Office Small Business Edition.
I was having this problem for all my new computer roll-outs with Office 2007. when opening an attached Excel file it would take several minutes in what should be a few seconds. The solution for me was to open outlook, open the email with an excel attachment. then click on the attachment ONCE and outlook will install the preview excel items it needs. You only need to do this once and it is fixed forever on all excel attachments!!!!
I just want to say, I have been looking in many places and the question itself mentioned the key to solving the problem for me which is replacing the /e with"%1"
I have tried adding the "%1" at the end like many other posts suggested but that never worked
So thanks a million for the owner of this question !! :)

I had this problem, and the easy, and unlikiely fix, was to enable the Lookup Wizard in Excel. Believe it or not, once I did this we could open spreadsheets from mail attachments no problem. Give it a try! :)

Further to all of the above, we always do a clean install of Office 2007 now and never an upgrade. Everytime we did an upgrade the performance of Office 2007 was terrible. We all have clean installs now and it all works fine. However no one like the ribbon, apart from me, I don't care.
Hope this helps - mastman
