Excel Experts-Exchange Regulars, take 4

As no one posted any comment here and to avoid it will be automatically deleted, if that would happen, here a small update.
currently: 577 open questions
Of these, 127 are recommended for deletion/PAQ-ed

Not that this makes sense, at least there is now a comment posted inhere.

I was just curious, yesterday it was mothersday in the Netherlands. Does this also counts for other countries?
And did people come up with some nice Excel Mothersday toolkit? I have to admit I thought about it, still it was easier to to let the kids make something as I could never beat a a hand made pottery something. So I left that thought.

Guys:

Okay, so I have a link to show me the unanswered questions in the Excel TA.  Does anyone have a link to view the Answered Questions like we used to have.  A question was just answered and I wanted to know the answer, but I can't find it.

Thanks,

Jaes

by: byundtPosted on 2007-05-15 at 15:30:42ID: 19096878

Jaes,
When I see a question where the answer might be interesting, I click the link at the bottom of the question box to "Monitor Question".

You can also construct a search query using the "Advanced Search" capability for questions in Excel Zone that were answered in the last 1, 3 7, etc days. There were 241 answered in the past 7 days: http://search.experts-exchange.com/advancedSearch.jsp?cid=325

I can see the grade assigned to the question in the results of this Search, something that is normally missing. I can also see which zones the question was asked in, something I could only do using my Page Editor powers.
Brad

by: webtubbsPosted on 2007-05-15 at 16:00:22ID: 19097023

Brad,

Given that the advanced search is pretty much a query, do you know of a way to sort the results?

For example, if I use a query of "taid:(604) typeid:(30)", and display 100, it seems to show the results from earliest to highest, or something like that. I'd like to get the newest questions at the top.

Cheers,

Wayne

Brad, Kevin, & Company:

I'm not sure of the EE Site rules behind this.  I understand posting a link to an answer in a question, but check this out.

http:/Q_22576808.html?#a19106053

Is there anything that says that Experts shouldn't refer those that ask questions to other Excel Forums?

Just curious...  especially since he got some of my points and didn't even answer the question.

Jaes

by: byundtPosted on 2007-05-17 at 09:22:57ID: 19109467

Jaes,
The rules are quite clear: you cannot suggest that an Asker post their questions on another forum. It is quite acceptable, however, to post a link to a specific place within that other forum where the Asker's question is answered. I'll get a Mod to pay attention to it (it's not the first violation).
Brad

by: LoNeRaVeR9Posted on 2007-05-18 at 08:10:05ID: 19116187

Brad:

Did any of the Mods say anything about dr_shivan's (http:/M_2599043.html) post?

Thanks for the link to the advanced search.

http://search.experts-exchange.com/advancedSearch.jsp?cid=325

Is there a way to return the results a list rather than brief summary form?

Thanks!

Jaes,
I did contact a Mod, and he promised to follow up on the issue--but I don't see the signs of it yet. It may be that the issue is getting kicked higher up (and the Admins are out of pocket until Sunday).

Upload and Save Microsoft Office Documents Online in One Click
posted by Amit Agarwal on 5/18/2007 11:18:00 AM
===
Box.net, the online file storage service that offers 1GB of free storage space, has developed some excellent add-ons that could make this service a darling for Microsoft Office users.

Box.net offers a virtual file explorer for your uploaded documents, pictures and videos. You can put this file explorer anywhere in your website and visitors can easily navigate through your files, download them offline or they can subscribe to your files in their newsreader.

Today, Box.net unveiled another useful service called "Office on Demand" - this is an add-on for your Microsoft Office programs that will let you save files directly from Word, Excel or Powerpoint directly to your online Box.net account. No need to launch your web browser.

Other than the convenience factor, Box.net is tightly integrated with Zoho Docs and Zoho sheet. Even if your computer has no Office license, you can still edit the .DOC or .XLS files from Box.net directly in Zoho Office and save the edited files back to Box.net.

by: byundtPosted on 2007-06-06 at 09:30:36ID: 19226459

I don't know if it has ever been mentioned, but Kevin was granted Page Editor powers a few weeks back. He started with a rant to Netminder about the new user interface, and after many subsequent discussions decided to join me as co-Page Editor for the Excel TA. That's a good move for all parties.

I don't anticipate any changes in policy within the Excel TA as a result of this change. Having an extra set of eyes able to take care of problems is a good thing, especially if one of us happens to be taking a day off.

Anyone ever tried the translate functionality which is nowadays on EE?
I just played along a bit and I have to say that it is awfull.
It mixes up standard Excel functions. parts of them stay in English and parts of the functions are translated.

Perhaps somehow this functionality comes handy in some way when questions are written down in unexplainable. Perhaps translation give another point of view on the question:)

by: mvidasPosted on 2007-06-12 at 12:45:04ID: 19269215

I played a little bit with it too, and noticed the same things (also the "Date" header of a post gets blended with the username--I'm sure its still a work in progress).
If EE creates some kind of code tag (or just a 'do not touch' tag), the translator can just skip that portion. Until then, not a greatly useful feature..
Is it on the "Post a question" page too? would be interesting to ask a question in another language then see how it translates into english, would probably make for some fun threads :)

by: roos01Posted on 2007-06-12 at 13:58:11ID: 19269845

As far I saw it is Googles translation function incorporated.
when moving over the translated sentence you see a google pop-up.

Perhaps they should embed some spell check instead. And to draw it even further, an excel function checker :)

by: fanpagesPosted on 2007-06-13 at 02:49:27ID: 19273077

"...would be interesting to ask a question in another language then see how it translates into english..."

I wonder if there is a US Language<->English Language conversion? ;)

Good to see that you're all still here.
I can see the top-10 starting above 1 Million points.... Congrats to all of you guys!!!! Several of you, by breaking the 6-million level, are even making Steve Austin jealous.

Well, I don't think I am back for the old 7x24 schedule, but i'll see you around.

Good to see you both back guys :)

Anyone out there with outlook 2003 mind testing something for me please (for http:/Q_22635190.html )? Sound is necessary
Download http://www.hastalavidas.com/OneStopPCHelp-OutlookSoundNotification.zip
That zip contains 4 files:
"notify.wav" - extract to C:\ (or change in .bas file the location)
"ThisOutlookSessionCode.txt" - copy/paste code into ThisOutlookSession object in outlook vba
"vSoundMdl.bas" and "vSoundCls.cls" - import into outlook VBA project

To test:
-Open new mail message, address it to yourself. subject/body are unimportant, don't send just yet
-Change focus to something other than outlook, then re-focus on new message. click send
-After a couple seconds, the .wav file should repeat until outlook application gets focus

Much thanks!!
Matt

by: roos01Posted on 2007-06-18 at 13:13:25ID: 19310251

Hello Matt,
The sound didn't ring.
Sorry to say.
Did what you wrote down. Im sure it tried to get the sound file since I forgot it initially and debugged with the message file not found, when continue it played the sound. Onlye not when lossing focus etc.
Hope this helps.
Jeroen

by: mvidasPosted on 2007-06-18 at 13:26:28ID: 19310373

Hmmm.. I really thought it would have no difference in 2003 (vs 2000). I even created a new .otm file for this, thinking maybe a stray module or something had an API call I forgot to declare in the attached files, and it still works fine for me.
I'll have to install 2003 at home (I got office2k3 on cd with my laptop but prefer 2000) to figure out why it isn't working..

FYI - I should have included this earlier, but the sound would only play when a new message is received and outlook doesnt have focus. once outlook gets focus the sound is stopped (until the same conditions are met again)

Thanks though!
Matt

July 1 was a very good day for the Excel TA as Kevin, Rory and Matt were each awarded the Microsoft MVP for Excel.

I assume that Shane Devenshire and Ture repeated their awards as well.

Congratulations to each, for a well-merited recognition of excellence and perseverance!

Congratulations to each of you.

There seems to be a "round in" error, though :)

(But given that an MVP is paid as much as an Experts-Exchange contributor we'll let you off with a warning this time)

BFN,

fp.

congrats to all of you, well deserved as always :)

Congrats guys! Well done and very well deserved!

Unfortunately, I'm not an MVP awardee at the moment - I've been too low on activitiy here lately. But I hope to get back in someday, when I deserve it again...

But right now I'm not of much use here. I'm on two weeks vacation, trying to play golf and enjoy the company of my family. But after that, I'll dive back into the Excel TA - one of my favourite places on the web.

Best regards / Ture

Does anyone knows if the rules to become an expert are changed. In the early days you could sign on for free, get a few free points to ask questions and if you liked it you could or become an expert earning points and a free membership for 3000 pnts a month.
Today I told an colleague about this site and he tried to sign on. He only could continue by paying in advance. Is the old feature removed or did I missed something?

Jeroen

by: mvidasPosted on 2007-07-06 at 10:11:47ID: 19433285

The rules are still the same (10,000 points to qualify for free, then maintain 3,000 a month with one grace month each time you don't get 3,000), though I think the Free Signup link isn't extremely well advertised (so they get more paying people)
http://www.experts-exchange.com/registerFree.jsp

by: roos01Posted on 2007-07-06 at 10:27:48ID: 19433425

Thanks Matt,
I knew that the rules where changed, only becoming member for free was very hard to find. Still hiding that link will cause more and less in lesser new users. Or they are very eager to pay.

Have a nice weekend

Way to go Jim!

Wow, I get busy for a month and come back to find I'm in the company of serious professionals now.  Perhaps I should go back and hide under my laptop for a while longer.  Seriously though, that's so incredibly awesome guys!  I'm jealous, but all of you deserve it!

So yesterday I was working on finance forecast and somehow accidentally found the shortcut to reverse the column headers to show Z-A with the row headers on the right instead of the left.  I have no idea how to do it.  I searched the internet and figured out how to make it go back through the Options menu, but cannot find the shortcut documented anywhere.  Have any of you heard of said shortcut?

Miss you guys!

by: zorvekPosted on 2007-07-12 at 09:20:49ID: 19473384

I can't find a keyboard shortcut for that feature. I suspect your xlb file is buggered. In customization mode, put the command in a menu and see if a shortcut is listed. The command is listed near the bottom of the Format menu.

by: byundtPosted on 2007-07-12 at 09:28:17ID: 19473448

ALT + tow will toggle the "Right to left" feature on and off.

by: zorvekPosted on 2007-07-12 at 09:38:32ID: 19473549

That's not a keyboard shortcut per se though. Those are menu keys - each pressed separately. And you have to add an ENTER to complete the operation.

Jaes: any possibility you would have tried to entered the text "tow" anywhere?

by: LoNeRaVeR9Posted on 2007-07-12 at 11:14:03ID: 19474349

It's crazy I know and it is possible I pressed a series of keys, but I never saw the options window open like it does when you press Alt+E+S+V+Enter.  I still think there is a shortcut.  The only good thing I can think to use it for is as a prank for someone's device, but I don't know how else I could have done it.  I was working on a spreadsheet and all of the sudden it was reversed.

It's official, Jim received the MVP award this year, mostly for his work here on Experts-Exchange!

by: LoNeRaVeR9Posted on 2007-07-12 at 13:52:55ID: 19476091

EE MVP Experts:

That is so very cool.  I have had a desire to be Excel MVP ever since I found Chip Pearson's web site back in 1999.  I had a chat with him at one point since he lives in the Kansas City area.  I never knew that I would have any avenue to achieve this dream, but you guys have given me hope.  Since I don't believe I will be hired for the new job that I recently applied I'm going to try and focus a little time each day to EE in hopes of someday making Genius and now perhaps even an Excel MVP.  :)  To be honest though, even if I never make either I'm just happy to have made the acquaintance of all of you here.  You have all taught me things I never could have learned on my own.

Here's a perfect example.  I have two charts on one spreadsheet one on top of another.  I wanted to reverse the data in the lower one that gives a data table showing the % increase or decrease from the previous quarter.  I used to manually add this formula trying to figure out which column and row to use for each one.  It was a pain.  Then today I remembered the INDEX and OFFSET functions and wrote this simple little gem.

=IF(OFFSET($A$1,MATCH($A12,$A$2:$A$8,0),MATCH(B$11,$B$1:$O$1,0))=0,0,OFFSET($A$1,MATCH($A12,$A$2:$A$8,0),MATCH(C$11,$B$1:$O$1,0))/OFFSET($A$1,MATCH($A12,$A$2:$A$8,0),MATCH(B$11,$B$1:$O$1,0))-1)

Now I have one formula that I can copy and paste and I'm done for the quarter for this chart.  If not for you guys I would never have even had any idea that something like this existed in Excel.  You guys are the best and always will be!

Kindest Regards,

Jaes

Nice, Jaes.

I will say that I was pretty surprised by it and a little flattered.  But as I've said before, the Experts in this TA have always been MVPs in my book.  It's kind of nice that the folks in Redmond finally noticed what a great job that our experts like Brad, Matt, Kevin, Rory and Patrick are doing helping their customers to utilize Excel to its fullest extent and increasing overall customer satisfaction.  There are others just as commendable including Patrick (ab), Jeroen, Nigel, Dave, Geoff, Wayne, Jaes, Seb and Ture among others.

Thanks to all,

Jim

Seems that our well beloved MS Excel is used more often for SPAM purposes. Will this end into prohibting excel files to be send by mail in the future?
Or will there be a growth of digital signatures using in excel files?

Haven't seen an Excel attachment yet but have seen plenty of PDFs lately. Also seeing the bogus greeting card from a friend/mate/family member/partner/blah blah blah.

One of these days our stupid politicians will realize they can't regulate this crap and will finally put into place one of the numerous authentication schemes that have been proposed - years ago - and we will all be saved.

by: roos01Posted on 2007-07-28 at 01:38:02ID: 19584022

I did retrieved the excel 2ce still don't know what is in them :)
The bogus greeting cards didn't work for me as well as Im aware I don't have friends anymore since I strat spending my time on EE.

Still those authentication schemes will also be hacked. I still cannot believe that people are so ignorant and belive that making easy money or bying high quality stuff for free or low prices. perhaps we need per person at least 2 mail adresses, 1 for personal mail and one for commercial mail. personal mail can only be retrieved when someone is in your retrievers list, people have to manually add them and one commercial mail where all non-personal mail goes. Thinking about this, I already have a simular thing like this: all commercial mail is going into the trashcan folder :)

Just moving a bit on EE I came up to this question. I have to say I was a bit dazzled. Perhaps a classic case of a pitfall on EE. When you think you are giving some direction towards the sollution, before you know you are in an assignment to write a full paper of risks etc.

I was intending to response to this Q though I don't have the time to do a complete investigation programm. Now Im currious how angelIII will react :) Will angelIII be restricter by the technology of EE since it wont be possible to give a 2 paper response at once?

http:/Q_22736848.html

Or is this someone who wants to use EE as a homework portal?
I never saw an question with so precise requirements " i want a report of 2 pages atleast."

FYI:

30/10/2006: E-mail from NetMinder suggesting I may get a T-Shirt for my [then] recent accomplishments at E-E.
20/08/2007 [i.e. today]: T-shirt arrived bearing the address label text: "fanpages Medium Genius".

One wonders if there are sub-levels of "Large Genius" & "Small Genius" in this rank now.

:)

by: roryaPosted on 2007-08-20 at 15:28:13ID: 19734289

I was a large genius. though when my wife said it, it sounded suspiciously like 'jackass'.

by: matthewspatrickPosted on 2007-08-20 at 19:34:25ID: 19735182

When I hit Genius in Access a couple of weeks ago, I said to my wife "goody, I earned another
t-shirt."  She gave me that "you poor, poor man" look and asked me, "so, will this one say
genius, or will it say freakazoid?"

Some people just don't get it :)

by: fanpagesPosted on 2007-08-20 at 23:51:59ID: 19735900

...so neither of you have dared to wear your shirts whilst out with your other halves then?

Perhaps E-E could send you both a pair of trousers too? ;)

by: roos01Posted on 2007-08-21 at 09:33:35ID: 19739304

OK. I have to admit, I wear the T-shirt.
It is the only moment someone else shout at me calling me Genius. I believe my wife is allowing me since she always in for a good laugh

My children adore me since I explained a huge world-wide institution thinks I'm a genius and awarded me en perhaps in the nearby future it will make me rich. It also might have to do with the translation from English to Dutch :)
My sun understood the word rich and start asking me when Im going to buy the long-ago-promised-knight-castle. I think I have to build it in Excel and convince him that Excel is a very good application.

To whom who wants to know.
There seems a minor bug in Excel 2007.
When a calculation should come to the number: 65535 then it displays: 100,000
like: 850*77.1

for some other examples:
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.excel/browse_thread/thread/2bcad1a1a4861879/2f8806d5400dfe22?hl=en#2f8806d5400dfe22

Will this also infect the loop through Rows. Will it skip the rows between 65535 and 100,000

Anyone here who works for 850 hours a year for an hour rate of $77.1?

Did you at least have a happy birthday?

When was it, Jaes? I won a master shirt for outlook 06/15/2007 (per the expert shirts page) and just received it maybe 2 weeks ago

by: LoNeRaVeR9Posted on 2007-09-26 at 08:41:52ID: 19963956

I had a pretty good birthday.  For anyone that cares (i.e. Kevin) I made it successfully to 37.

Thank you Brad!  I guess this means I need to get to Genius so I can get a shirt.

Work has been crazy the past couple months, but I need 2k points so I don't lose my expert status, so I'll be trying to answer a few questions over the next few days at least...

Miss you guys!

by: LoNeRaVeR9Posted on 2007-09-26 at 08:43:19ID: 19963973

Well I received an E-mail near the end of last year from one of the Admins who asked for my mailing address.  Brad was involved in part of the conversation if I recall.  I gave him all the info, but no shirt...  What's the expert shirts page?  Things have changed quite a bit since I was here last.

Click the link to Edit your profile, verify your password, click the "For Experts" button, then go to the Expert Shirts. There should be a link there to send it
I also got the email from NM last fall, but didn't get the actual shirt until this expert shirts page was added

Happy belated b-day!

Brad!  You are so awesome!  Thanks man...  I do need to pay more attention...  You probably sent an E-mail to me, too...  Perhaps I should stop working so much and catch up on my EE...  Things have changed around here...  I noticed that I'm close to getting knocked off the Top Expert list so I'd better do something about that.

You may notice new expert mikefos posting comments in Excel threads. This would be Mike Fosmire, whose day job is identifying MVP candidates for North America in Excel and several other Microsoft technologies. He joined EE in January, and recently expressed an interest in seeing what the answering side of EE was all about, so Kevin invited him to participate. Mike was recognized as an Excel expert by previous employers, and reads thousands of posts as part of his current job--so I wouldn't be the least surprised if he shows us a few new tricks.

I hope you will join me in welcoming Mike when he posts in one of our Excel threads.

Brad

by: roryaPosted on 2007-10-03 at 06:19:13ID: 20006230

Does that mean I have to stop getting things wrong, or lose my MVP award? :)

by: LoNeRaVeR9Posted on 2007-10-03 at 07:02:13ID: 20006593

Brad:

That only makes me want to post more.  I'm glad Kevin invited Mike.  On a side note I made it to EE Excel Expert #14 yesterday.

I always want to learn new tricks just like the one that Kevin taught me this week.

http:/Q_22864583.html#a19993225

I haven't received my EE Excel Expert shirt, yet, but I did take the Buffalo Wild Wings Blazin' Challenge last night and scored a Blazin' Challenge Survivor T-Shirt for eating 12 Blazin' Wings in 4:19.  For those unfortunate souls who don't have a BWW near them here's a description of the challenge.

"The "Blazin' Challenge" is offered at some locations to patrons who can finish 12 of the hottest wings offered (wings with Blazin' sauce) in less than 6 minutes. The rules are no drinking water or touching the face. Customers who complete the challenge receive a t-shirt."

I tried to find the link driectly on their web site, but it's all in flash and not offered at every location, so I couldn't find it.  I did happen to find this on one guy's blog though and thought it funny enough to share.

I bit into the wing and thought "Hmm that's not too bad." And I quickly finished off the remainder of the wing in two solid bites.

Then suddenly time stopped. The sounds of the bar faded away into slow motion garbble and one by one I could feel the taste buds on my tongue burst into flame. I have never eaten anything that hot in my entire life, and I never will again. Every ounce of higher brain function that I had was suddenly shut down and in the space of 25 seconds I was reduced to a quivering pile of gelatinous goo. I felt as though I was channeling Jerry Lewis at this point. I could only speak in gibberish. Copious amounts of sweat had burst forth all over my head and begun to run down... even from my eyelids.

No wait... those were tears.

Have a good day all...  I may not be a Genius for putting myself to such torture, but Excel Genius here I come!

by: mvidasPosted on 2007-10-03 at 08:28:52ID: 20007410

Jaes,

Fun story! I did the Blazin' Challenge a couple years ago too, though I didn't get a t-shirt. I did, however, get my picture on the wall (for a few months) and the wings for free :) Congratulations, that is not an easy feat. At least you realized your mouth wasn't going to cool down any time soon and your body was going to hate you anyways, so there was no reason to stop once you started. They don't even give you free wings anymore at our BWW for doing it, otherwise I'd love to try it again.

And a big welcome to Fozzie!
Matt

by: byundtPosted on 2007-10-03 at 09:04:13ID: 20007739

Jaes,
I'm surprised nobody suggested a SUMIF in the thread you referenced. It has wildcard capabilities and can even handle entire columns when asked nicely.
=SUMIF(Sales!$D$2:$D$20000,A16 & "*",Sales!$E$2:$E$20000)

Brad

by: LoNeRaVeR9Posted on 2007-10-03 at 09:07:13ID: 20007763

Brad:

The crazy thing is that I tried to get SUMIF to work before Kevin even posted and couldn't get it to give me the right answer.  Then I tried to get LEFT to work after Kevin posted and couldn't get it to work until Patrick figured it out.

Just to keep you all aware, I was informed a little over 2 weeks ago that my group at work will be losing our jobs at the end of the year (12/31). This is due to some regulatory and corporate reasons that few would likely want to hear (will explain if you want). I'm not heartbroken over this, as I am taking it as an opportunity to get into a position where my skills might actually be used and I'm getting a small but still decent severance (7 1/2 years here). I think I'm going to try my hand at first the contracting market and then hopefully consulting (and doing lots of research on both).
I doubt this will really effect my forum participation, as I love helping out, and it may finally put an end to some of my privacy concerns since I would no longer really have to keep an eye out for corporate big brother coming down on me.
Anyways, just keeping you all in the loop
Matt

by: LoNeRaVeR9Posted on 2007-10-05 at 07:15:36ID: 20022037

Matt:

Sorry to hear about your job.  I was just reading an article last night that talked about how many people don't realize that they could make as much as twice what they currently make by looking at different markets where they can fully utilize their skills and be compensated well for it.  Sometimes it takes a life changing event to open one's eyes to even better opportunities.  I wish you the best.  Keep in touch...

For the time being you might spend your time at this Q: http:/Q__22875811.html
