Open Large spreadsheet

Hi,
I have a large text bases spreadsheet with some 3.6 million records/rows with 11 cells per row.
I am looking for any program that can handle such a file for sorting and to make smaller parts. I tried Excel and OpenOffice Clc and both are limited for some reason. There must be some program that can handle a large database so that we can sort this and then make sublists depending on a field like Industry.
If there is not application that does the whole file are you having any suggestions on how I could accomplish my task of sorting this and then making subfiles using the sorted "Industry" cell/
