Question

Can vba subs be arranged in A-Z order

Asked by: PeterWhitts

When you have 40 or so subs in a module, searching for one can take a little time especially if some of them are long.

Is there a way of sorting them in A-Z order and then back again?

There is no built-in function for sorting routines. I will occasionally find my routines to not be in alpha order and so I just move them around manually until they are. In the future always add new routines in the desired order and you won't have to worry about this again.

They are already listed alphabetically if you go to the top of the code window and select (General) then look at the alphabetized list of procedures in the right dropdown list.

The drop down is always in sorted order, however I find it rather disconcerting when the drop down and my actual code are not in the same order as I like to scroll up and down as well as use the drop down.

Kevin,
You may want to take a look at a vba addin called MZTools.  I believe it has an option to sort your sub rountines within the actual code window.

I have seen tools that do this. I have also written my own. But since I follow best practices and always put new routines in the correct location to begin with, I have found the need for these tools to be negligible.

Kevin,
Sorry, I thought you were the OP, otherwise I wouldn't have started preaching to you:-)(Just changed to expert format and missed the zorvek).  I'm with you, I don't actually use the tool, but I do know that it will allow you to use this.:-)

I used to always alphabetize and reorganize (and yes, putting in order helps them stay in order) but I found it was taking up enough of my time that it wasn't worth the extra effort since the dropdown list is alphabetized already.

I also like to split my view window so I can see two parts and view one area in one and a different area in the other, which offsets a lot of the struggles of scrolling up and down looking for something since you can always retain your previous procedure in one sub-window while you search for what you want in the other sub-window.

MZTools.com has a toolbar you can download which has a feature that allows you to arrange subs. One of those ways is alphabetical.

Thanks for the answers...I agree about keeping everything tidy to start with.
The drop down box I know about but I never realized that the vba side of Excel had a split feature...thanks for that.

MZTools answers the question so gets the accept but others get an assist for the contributions.

Thanks for all the help.
