The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Loop through all subfolders and output file names
Tags: VB
I wish to search through a directory looking for files that match a preset file name.  The following bit of code I have is not doing that, it is purely outputting the folder name (removing the if statement shows this).  Any ideas how to make it search through each subfolder?

Sub ShowFolderList()

   Dim fso, folder, file, s, subfolder

   Set fso = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")

   Set folder = fso.GetFolder("c:\")

   Set subfolder = folder.SubFolders

   For Each file In subfolder

    'If LCase(Left(file.Name, 4)) = "abcd" Then
        s = s & file.Name & " (" & folder.Name & ")" & vbCr
    'End If

   Next

    Debug.Print s

End Sub

Hi wobbled,

You need to recurse the subfolders with an additional routine like this.

Recursive file search using FileSystemObject:

Option Explicit

Private Sub Command1_Click()
    Dim col As Collection
    Dim vFile As Variant

    Set col = GetFiles("C:\temp", "*.txt")
    For Each vFile In col
        Debug.Print vFile
    Next

End Sub

Public Function GetFiles(strPath As String, strPattern As String) As Collection
    Dim fso As FileSystemObject
    Dim fld As Folder
    Dim col As Collection
    Set fso = New FileSystemObject
    Set fld = fso.GetFolder(strPath)
    Set col = New Collection

    CheckFolder fld, strPattern, col

    Set GetFiles = col
End Function

Private Sub CheckFolder(fld As Folder, strPattern As String, col As Collection)
    Dim f As File
    Dim subfld As Folder
    For Each f In fld.Files
        If f.Name Like strPattern Then
            col.Add f.Path
        End If
    Next
    For Each subfld In fld.SubFolders
        CheckFolder subfld, strPattern, col
    Next
End Sub
