Excel 2007 tries to open word and pdf files automatically on opening

Excel 2007 upon opening tries to open a Word docx document and says
File format is not valid, I select cancel then Excel tries to open a pdf file with same error then
after hitting cancel after  seeing the same error again it goes to the traditional Excel
spreadsheet page and will open files normally.

Check for file extension associations  of Excel with word and adobe. To regain file association, Right click any Excel file with .XLSX extension, and in Open With menu, select Choose Program. Then from the program listing, select Microsoft Excel 2007, and check Always Use this Program to Open this kind of file, and hit OK. Hope it works!!!

It sounds as though you have additional files in one of Excel's startup directories. Check:
C:\documents and settings\username\application data\microsoft\excel\XLSTART
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\XLSTART
and any other directory set in Excel Options for the 'at startup open all files in' option.

Thanks for the prompt replies,
I have already tried the association but that was already set correctly.
When I get back into the office I will try the other solution from rorya.

I located the both xlstart directories but the folders are empty

Did you check the Excel Options? Users sometimes put their My Documents folder in the 'startup path' option by mistake rather than the 'default file location' option.

Check for any viral activity as well. Try reinstalling the suite, or repairing Office Installation. Hope that will work for as a final resort.
