It sounds as though you have additional files in one of Excel's startup directories. Check:
C:\documents and settings\username\applicat
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\XLSTART
and any other directory set in Excel Options for the 'at startup open all files in' option.

Check for file extension associations of Excel with word and adobe. To regain file association, Right click any Excel file with .XLSX extension, and in Open With menu, select Choose Program. Then from the program listing, select Microsoft Excel 2007, and check Always Use this Program to Open this kind of file, and hit OK. Hope it works!!!
