The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Problem with Parameter in a Web Query

Asked by guyking in Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet Software

Tags: , ,

I am having difficulty using the Data/Import External Data Web Query capabilities in Excel 2003.  The basic issue is that I want another cell to be a parameter to the URL that is invoked.

Because of the nature of the project, I cannot give the real URL, but let's use a simple stock quote inquiry for discussion purposes.  Say I create a web query that will use
    http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=t
to get the price of AT&T stock

I want the [t] to be a parameter, so that I can have a column of Stock symbols, and then the query "formula" will be in the next column, and when I refresh, I will get the appropriate data back.  My example of yahoo finance is imperfect since the returned table has multiple lines, but just assume that in my real case I will get back a simple one-line table with the result I need.

Anyway, from my searches thus far, it seems that in order to have parameters one needs to save the query to a file before changing it.
I have done that, and using the yahoo example, my query file looks like this:

WEB
1
http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=t

Selection=table1
Formatting=None
PreFormattedTextToColumns=True
ConsecutiveDelimitersAsOne=True
SingleBlockTextImport=False
DisableDateRecognition=False
DisableRedirections=False

So, how do I get my cell values into the Query as a parameter so that this query can be dynamic based on values already in the spreadsheet?

I hope all of that is clear -- anxiously awaiting a response.

Thanks in advance!
