Shared Excel (xls) files - inconsistent "read-only" handling

Asked by itcgroup in Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet Software

Hi

I have received a report from a staff member that they are experiencing file sharing problems with Excel xls workbooks.  I am aware that the "Share Workbook" option is unreliable but I don't think that it is being used in this case.

The symptoms are xls files either being opened twice in read+write mode and changes being overwritten, or files reporting that they are already open and can only be opened read-only despite them not being open by anyone else.  I believe that the second problem can happen if a file is still open in the memory of another computer (eg. it has crashed).

The files are being opened/edited in Excel 2000.  One of the copies didn't have a username so that has been added.

Is this, as I suspect, a common problem and would upgrading to Excel 2007 be likely to resolve the issue (Excel 2000 is currently being used for compatibility reasons with Act!).

Many thanks
