The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Server based Word and Excel files very slow to open

Tags: Microsoft, Word and Excel, Professional 2003, SBS 2003-based files
We had a network hardware problem with the server a few days ago which resulted in the Cat5 cable being changed. To be on the safe side a new Ethernet card was fitted along with a new 10/100 switch. Network communication is now first class except for when users attempt to open server-based Word and Excel documents, which can take up to a minute or so to open. First of all the applications take about 20-40 seconds to open, then the file contents appear about 10-30 seconds later. If Word or Excel is opened locally, the application starts up in about 2 seconds. Once a file has been opened from the server, extra files open in under a second (which means that the files are being served out very quickly). There are three users, all on XP SP2.

1) hard to say, but it sounds like a DNS issue or WINS, so I would start there.

2) have you tried a Local Hosts file pointing to the server ?

I hope this helps !

It could be a bad NIC in one of the workstatins, too. Take each one out of the loop and see if performance increases.

Thanks for your input, guys. However, as stated, it is only Word and Excel I am having a problem with. All other file type access from the server is pretty much instant. This would explain away DNS, WINS and another NIC being the problem. For example, Powerpoint files open in about 1 to 2 seconds which, considering the application has to start first, is pretty good. This has to be an application layer issue, really. I don't have sufficient knowledge of Word/Excel client/server internals to troubleshoot the problem. I know that, if I monitor the processes on the server and client, there is liitle change in activity. It's as though the server is timing out on some required parameter or other (like a template) and then giving up the information when all else fails.

Right. But if everything *used to work* before the *hardware failure*, that is what leads me to believe it is a hardware issue.

The facts (as you present them):

1, New CAT5 cabling
2. New NIC in the server
3. New switch

I don't see any software in there.

Thanks for hanging in, Badotz. The switch was changed because all the PCs and server were running at 10Mb/sec HDX. After the new switch was installed all the network ran at 100Mb/sec FDX. However, pings to google.com were still taking about 4100ms from any PC and server. Each PC was disconnected in turn and still the same. But when the server was disconnected, a ping from any PC to google.com dropped to about 110ms. So then I added a NIC to the server. Still the same. Then I changed the cable run from the server to the switch. All OK. I tested the old switch later with a couple of laptops and it was running at 100Mb FDX, so the bad cable run from the server to the switch was causing packet retransmissions and overloading the first switch. The second switch was of higher quality so could handle the packet retransmits. I could see the difference immediately at the NIC status.

So, to summarize: The cabling problem is fixed and Internet access, email, etc is much better than it has ever been for quite some time. The old switch is OK, as probably is the old NIC. File access from any PC to the server is also excellent. PDFs, Powerpoint and other applications open in a twinkling of an eyelid. Word and Excel still take forever. That is where the software issue is.

Incidentally, on Monday I'm putting a LAN analyzer in place to see what is happening over the cable when accessing Word and Excel. I'll post the results because I know you are really interested. Thanks again.

It is when "this should not be happening" happens that things really get interesting ;-)

I am no hardware guru, nor do I plan on becoming one. But intractable problems have been my life for the past 25 years or so.

"Get out of that box!"

If you replaced the NIC without first "uninstalling" the previous NIC and without then rerunning the Configure Email and Internet Connection Wizard (CEICW -- which is linked as Connect to the Internet in the Server Management Console > To-Do List), you will run into networking problems.

The reason for this is that SBS binds the NIC GUID to its routing.  So it doesn't matter if the IP address is the same, the GUID isn't.

My suggestion would be to now uninstall ALL NICS and make sure they are deleted from the registry.  Then reinstall them again, run the CEICW (visual how-to is at http://sbsurl.com/ceicw).

After that, reboot all workstations and see if your problem is solved.

Thanks, TechSoEasy. I tried your recommendation but no improvement. I put my thinking cap back on and went in a different direction, by isolating the server down to each PC in turn and then PC to PC in turn. This revealed the same result in every case - slow document startups. Opening a blank document per PC (using the normal.dot template) produced acceptably fast results. Opening localised Word documents (dated after about March 2008) per PC was very slow. Now the daylight began to dawn. One of the users opens documents with Office 2007 (saving in 2003 binary format). I opened one of these files with Word 2003, selected all the content and copied it into a blank document and saved it to the server. I went to another PC and opened this file from the server and, voila, instant result. I've gone around all the PCs doing the same and the slow startup problem has been eliminated. The same has been done with Excel docs (also have been opened with Excel 2007). It looks as though there may be an "undocumented feature" there (as we used to say in my DEC days). Please consider this problem solved and closed. Thanks, everybody.
