The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Excel File - Attach Binary Data

Asked by geoffdb in Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet Software, Miscellaneous Software

Tags: , ,

I wish to attach 'external' binary data to a conventional Excel file so that
a) the binary data is attached to, or stored within, the normal Excel file, but so that
b) Excel, without add-ins, runs the spreadsheet as normal
c) Excel, without add-ins, saves the binary data with the spreadsheet
d) Excel, with an appropriate add-in, can extract and/or process the binary data.

I can do (b) simply by appending a binary data file to any spreadsheet by using the DOS Copy command
with /B switch.   This runs fine in Excel, but loses the binary data upon save
I am confident I can do (d) by whatever means.   However, I am currently unable to do (c).

Some thoughts :
i) Use Excel's 'BigData' facility ?
ii) Append/insert the data similar to what can be done with an executable file ?
iii) Create some form of "block" within the file structure which Excel recognises - and leaves alone,
but gets saved AOK
I've tried (i) previously, but it seems to be little used and even less well documented.
I have the Microsoft Excel 97 Developers Kit book, and wonder if it was possible to use IMDATA or
similar.   However, my understanding of Excel's file system etc is insufficient for this kind of
task.    I note some programs are able to inspect an Excel file and to analyse for (and delete)
unused blocks (e.g. FastExcel).   On this basis, I believe there must be some means of achieving this
capability.

BTW : I am only trying to do this with Excel 2000 - 2003 (at present)Start Free Trial
