Open CSV or TXT file with long text

Is it possible to open a text file with long text (more that 255 characters) or multiline text in Excel?

I want to pull text from a database and put it into an Excel spreadsheet.  But the text is often longer than 255 characters.  When it is, Excel splits that text into multiple cells.  I'd really like the entire text to be save in one cell.

I know that this is asking a lot from Excel, but I'd also like to import the text in such a way that I can preserve (or insert) soft carriage returns.  Some of the data is multi-line and it's be nice if that formatting could be preserved.
