The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Retrieving User defined File Properties without opening the file using VBScript

Asked by ETC-Staff in Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet Software

Tags: ,

I am working on a vb script (.vbs) for a user to open a Microsoft Access project file (.adp) on their desktop.  It checks to see if there is a newer version of the file on the server.  If there is, it asks the user if they want to overwrite their file or not.  If they say yes, it copies the file from the network to the local file and runs it.  I am comparing the creation dates of the two files to see if the file is newer on the network.  What I would like to do is compare version numbers.  The Access project files  don't come with a version number, but you can add a property to them by right-clicking on the file name, click properties, and then click the custom tab.  I can create a version property and set its value, but I can't figure out how to get VBScript to read the value of the property.  Can this be done in VBScript or anything else?  I am using Windows XP service pack 2.

It looks like your solution below works for previously defined propterties and I might be able to use one of them for this problem.  Is it possible to read a user defined property.

Hi Experts.

The path for the file is here:

C:\Documents and Settings\user\My Documents\System\010136282P.xls

I want to access its properties like Title Author and Comments without opening it...

The reason I don´t want to open it, is because I plan to report lists of the properties of many files and it would be too slow if we have to open each file separately, read properties and then close it....
