Question

Normal Distribuiton creation

Asked by: Treasur2

I'm looking for guidance or software (free) that will assist me in re-learning normal distribuiton curves, standard deviations, covariance, etc.  I've opened my big mouth and suggested I do this for a project, now I have to bring back my statistics knowledge from 25 years ago in college.

I'm well aware that excel 2007 can do this. But I was hoping to find some web sites or books that would walk me through it again, I have a one week deadline.

Sorry I'm looking for more straight forward "how to" do a normal distribution in excel 2007.  Step 1, 2, 3.

In excell2007 the function
NORMSDIST(z)
returns values (as z is varied) with a mean of 0 and a standard deviation of 1.
This can get you what I think you want.

I mean draw the graph. Another words I have the data, i want to draw the graph, the standard Bell curve garph given a set of data, been researching this for days.  I know its just my inexperience with Excel and 25 year absence from School.

I'm seeing lots of steps in different places on the web. But I can't seem to put them together.

by: aburrPosted on 2008-06-28 at 18:24:37ID: 21892621

I think that you want the mean and standard deviation of the normal distribution that will give the best (least squares) fit to the data you have. (Ant then draw that bell curve).
Am I correct?

by: Treasur2Posted on 2008-06-28 at 18:27:46ID: 21892627

No.  I have that information.  I just found what I need here....I needed to draw a normal dist graph, from data points on a scattergraph.

from the disucssion above I figure that you are looking for a frequency plot. For example: number of children
               under 4 feet tall      =   2
          between 4 and 5 feet  =   5
          between 5 and 6 feet  =   2
          over 6 feet                   =   1
                                 Total      = 10

but such frequencies plots are not always normal curves. What will always be a normal curve? Instead of one sample of 10 students, if you take large number of samples of  sets 10 students and then plot the frequency of the average heights. For example

number of sets of 10 samples with average height under 4 feet                       = 8
number of sets of 10 samples with average height between 4 and 4.5 feet     = 20
number of sets of 10 samples with average height between 4.5 and 5 feet     = 28
number of sets of 10 samples with average height between 5 and 5.5 feet     = 30
number of sets of 10 samples with average height between 5.5 and 6 feet     = 18
number of sets of 10 samples with average height over 6 feet                         = 7

If you can give more information about your data set. May be more help can be provided.
