Printed chart not same aspect ratio as on screen

Dear Experts

I'm using Excel 2002 (on Vista Ultimate 32bit) to create a xy (scatter) chart. On screen the grid lines of the x and y axis are the same distance apart. As a control I have drawn a 45 degrees diagonal line crossing the gridline intersections.
When I print preview the chart by itself the preview is the same as the on screen version. However printing the chart this way doesn't allow me to scale it to, say, 30% (the options are only custom, fit to page or full page). Therefore I resolved to printing the cells containing the chart.
But this way the squares of the grid become rectangles and the diagonal line - while still printed at at the original angle of 45 degrees - doesn't cross the gridlines intersections anymore.
I wan't to print it on a Okipage 14e but even with the XPS document writer "printer" the distortion occurs.

Any idea how to print the chart the way it appears on screen but scaled down to 20% or 30%?
Of course, I could reduce in size the chart itself. But what I'm interested in is why is Excel not printing WYSIWYG and how can I achieve that?

Thanks for your input
