Question

Plotting a OWC Graph using VBA in Ms Excel

Asked by: Navgod

Hi Folks,

I am trying to plot a graph entirely using VBA and no user interaction on a form using the OWC chart.

I have managed to assign the datasource to the graph and cant get over the next hurdle of assigning the data fields to the various axis. See code below. The last line is the problem and i get the following error " Method 'SetData' of object ' chchart' failed"

I can confirm that the datasource is assigned correctly on the chart and that i can manually arrange the fields as i like. I would just like to automate this process.

Please help.

regards,

Nav

I think you are getting error because you are trying to assign X values before setting Y values. Excel Charts can't have X values until they have at least one Y series. Also, I ma not sure if method SetData can be applied correct here

You may run something like code below to add several series at once

 Menu.ChartSpace1.Charts(0).SetSourceData Source:= chDimYValues

Or, create Series one by one with adding corresponding YValues arrays

by: NavgodPosted on 2008-08-14 at 02:58:53ID: 22228864

Hippohood

I have tried assigning yvalues first and get same error. Tried your code but i do not have the .setsourcedata method for chartspace

I am looking at this and it is still hard to get it to work

You're not using an XY scatter chart so you can't set the XValues. You want chDimCategories.

Rory

Rory,

I changed the line to

Menu.ChartSpace1.Charts(0).SetData chDimCategories, 0, "Date"

and still get the same error message.

Are there any examples of how to get the OWC controls working correctly?

by: roryaPosted on 2008-08-14 at 05:20:02ID: 22229485

What is your actual data source - your connection string looks odd. Have you checked there is actually data in your recordset, and is Date a field in your table (I'm assuming you actually have a table)?

by: roryaPosted on 2008-08-14 at 05:20:52ID: 22229492

PS As an aside, it's a bad idea to name a field in a database Date as it is a reserved word in so many languages!

by: roryaPosted on 2008-08-14 at 05:24:48ID: 22229515

Just tested your code using a database with a Table1 containing Date field and Value field and it worked fine.

by: NavgodPosted on 2008-08-14 at 05:27:12ID: 22229534

Rory,

Yup, there is data in the recordset. After line 14 of the code, i can manually drag and drop the fileds on the chart and the chart plots as i want it to to.

The date field is only for testing, the actual field name is different in production.

The data returned looks something like this:

Date             Location    Unit0000   Unit0001
01/01/2008   LOC            2                  1
01/01/2008   MEC           3                   1

The stacked graph  x axis is Date and location, y -axis total of the units stacked into one bar chart for each location.

It works if i do it manually, i just cant get the code right to automate it. I hope this helps.

regards,

Nav

Here is a snapshot of what the graph looks like plotted manually

by: roryaPosted on 2008-08-14 at 05:47:38ID: 22229692

My mistake - you need to use the SetData method on the Chartspace object not on the Charts(0) object!

by: roryaPosted on 2008-08-14 at 05:52:28ID: 22229723

For example, binding to a table in an Access database:

   Set Me.ChartSpace1.DataSource = Nothing
   With Me.ChartSpace1
      .ConnectionString = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=C:\test1.mdb"
      .DataMember = "Table1"
      .SetData chDimValues, chDataBound, "Value"
      .SetData chDimCategories, 0, "Date"
      With .Charts(0)
         .Type = chChartTypeColumnStacked
         .HasTitle = True
         .HasLegend = True
         .Title.Caption = "Total Number of Documents By Date"
      End With
   End With

We are getting somewhere now!

Ok it adds the date field to the x axis but i also need another field to be added to the same axis.

If i run the same line twice, it removes the previous field that was added.

How can i add multiple fields to the same axis?

by: roryaPosted on 2008-08-14 at 06:02:53ID: 22229797

Use an array:

.SetData chDimCategories, 0, Array("Date", "Value")

for example.

by: NavgodPosted on 2008-08-14 at 06:10:53ID: 22229870

Ok we are getting even further now.

got all the fields added to the graph, now how can i plot the graph like the snapshot above?

which basicallly adds all the Y fields and plots according to the x axis summing the values for each location?

by: NavgodPosted on 2008-08-14 at 06:17:30ID: 22229925

ok i got one value working but cant get the array working just like the categories

Menu.ChartSpace1.SetData chDimValues, 0, ["1000"]

any ideas?

by: roryaPosted on 2008-08-14 at 06:23:18ID: 22229978

I guess you would use the same syntax:

Me.ChartSpace1.SetData chDimValues, 0, Array("1000", "2000", "3000")

Note: it is better to use Me to refer to the running form.

by: NavgodPosted on 2008-08-14 at 06:29:32ID: 22230039

Nope, I tried that already. I get a runtime error - Invalid procedure call or arguement

by: NavgodPosted on 2008-08-14 at 07:32:38ID: 22230649

cannot figure it out. Tried many different ways

this is what i want to be added to the graph as a multiple series

Me.ChartSpace1.SetData chDimValues, 0, "0000"
Me.ChartSpace1.SetData chDimValues, 0, "1000"
Me.ChartSpace1.SetData chDimValues, 0, "2000"
Me.ChartSpace1.SetData chDimValues, 0, "3000"

at the moment each executes separately replacing the previous added series value.

by: NavgodPosted on 2008-08-14 at 07:39:47ID: 22230711

got it!!

Menu.ChartSpace1.PlotAllAggregates = chPlotAggregatesSeries
Menu.ChartSpace1.SetData chDimValues, chDataBound, Array("0000", "1000", "2000", "3000")

only issue now is the headings that come up above the chart (see snapshot above)

i.e sum of 0000, sum of 1000 and so on.

Is there a way to get rid these headings?

What is the layout of your source table, so I can replicate it to test on?

by: NavgodPosted on 2008-08-14 at 07:53:57ID: 22230846

i figured it is to do with drop areas.

how can i disable this via code?

cant seem to find the property

by: NavgodPosted on 2008-08-14 at 07:56:57ID: 22230877

displayfields = false!

finally!

Thanks Rory once again for helping!. You truly are a maestro at all things vba!

cheers,

Nav

by: roryaPosted on 2008-08-14 at 08:01:34ID: 22230919

You can use the DisplayFieldButtons property of the Chartspace object set to False to hide them.
