Question

combine every other row, then seperate into columns

Asked by: jonp5065

I have an Excel 2003 sheet with data in one column and many rows that looks like this:

PLU2                  000000000000000002
                       2            5.50
PLU10                 000000000000000010
                       1            3.00

What I need:
Every other row should be part of the row above it and  all the data should be in its own column or separated with some kind or delimiter.

 Example:

Column A               Column B                       Column C      Column D

PLU2                  000000000000000002           2                   5.50
PLU10                 000000000000000010          1                   3.00

OR

PLU2, 000000000000000002, 2, 5.50
PLU10, 000000000000000010, 1, 3.00

Hello jonp5065,

It would be useful to see some sample data.  EE now allows you to directly upload
files to your question.

Please be advised that once you upload a file, it can be publicly accessed, and that it
may not be possible to fully and permanently delete it.  Therefore, be very careful about
posting proprietary, confidential, or other sensitive information.  If necessary, use "fake"
and/or obfuscated data in your sample.

Regards,

Patrick

Use formulas. Create a few lines of formulas (see attached), and then copy it down. Make sure you copy enough "sets" of formula rows. After you've got the data into new columns, select the new data, and copy. Then Edit-->Paste Special-->Values to get rid of the formulas. Then select the first column of your new data. Hit Edit-->Go to-->Special and choose Blanks. It should select all the blank rows in that column. Hit Edit-->Delete. You'll be asked, and you'll choose "Entire Row". That should delete all the blank rows. Delete any leftover unwanted data. :)

Try this:
Import the text file from row 4 with Fixed width
Put this formula in C1
=LEFT(B2,FIND(" ",B2,1)-1)
Put this formula in D1
=RIGHT(B2,LEN(TRIM(B2))-FIND(" ",B2,1))
Copy formulas down as far as required
Copy columns D and C and paste special as values to get rid of formulas
Sort file

See sample file

Thanks epaclm, that works.

Is there a way to do this automatically? Some kind of macro or something?

I have to do this multiple time with different size files, all that  same format though.

by: epaclmPosted on 2009-01-16 at 23:18:05ID: 23399893

You can try this macro and function. it works on the sample file. Try with the command button in the attached file.

The macro and the function in the code snippet are stored in module 1 of the sample file.

Cheers,
Curt
