Question

Jump to cell macro

Asked by: Gazza83

If I was to set up a blank cell in B3 of my worksheet. Then from B7 onwards was a list of names, beginning with surname.

Would there be a macro code I could use if I began to type the name into the cell it would jump to the cells that only meet that criteria?

I.e Type in letter D, the cell jumps to the first surname that begins with the letter D

Many thanks for your help

Try this file...I put this code in the worksheet Change event...

It allows you to type as many characters as you want in case you want to narrow it down to the first 2 characters or 3 or whatever...

Just type a value and hit enter...

:-)
Albert

Private Sub Worksheet_Change(ByVal Target As Range)
Dim r As Range
Dim MaxRow As Long
MaxRow = Range("B" & Cells.Rows.Count).End(xlUp).Row
If Target.Value = "" Then Exit Sub

If Target.Address(False, False) = "B3" Then
    Set r = Range("B7")
        Do Until LCase(Left(r.Value, Len(Range("B3").Value))) = LCase(Range("B3").Value)
            Set r = r.Offset(1, 0)
            If r.Row > MaxRow Then
                MsgBox "That value was not found to be a start of any name"
                Exit Sub
            End If
        Loop
        r.Select

End If

End Sub

You can't execute VBA code while editing a cell. But you can when the cell is entered (closed after making the edits). See the attached workbook.

Use this code for the Worksheet_Change event.  Instruct the user to enter the first letter and press <Enter>: this code will take them to the first cell that begins with that letter.  Sample Excel sheet attached.

Private Sub Worksheet_Change(ByVal Target As Range)

    If Target = Range("B3") Then
        Cells.Find(Range("B3").Value, ActiveCell, xlValues).Activate
    End If

End Sub

More improvements. If you enter the letter "A" then all the names that start with "A" will be displayed. If you enter "*A" then all names with an "A" anywhere in the name will be displayed. I also hid the AutoFilter drop down arrows.

Instead of requiring the user to hit the Enter key, you might like the instant response of using events with a ComboBox object (from the Controls ToolBox). As you type, the list will shrink.

I've modified Kevin's latest macro to work with a ComboBox in the snippet and attached file.

 Brad

Private Sub ComboBox1_KeyUp(ByVal KeyCode As MSForms.ReturnInteger, ByVal Shift As Integer)
Dim Column As Range
With ComboBox1.Parent
    .AutoFilterMode = False
    If Len(ComboBox1.Value) > 0 Then
        .[B6:D20].AutoFilter
        For Each Column In .AutoFilter.Range.Columns
           .AutoFilter.Range.Cells(1, 1).AutoFilter Field:=Column.Column - .AutoFilter.Range.Column + 1, Visibledropdown:=False
        Next Column
        .[B6:D20].AutoFilter Field:=1, Criteria1:="=" & ComboBox1.Value & "*", Operator:=xlAnd
    End If
End With
End Sub
