Counting Cells with text in

Hi experts

I have a spreadsheet named "Shift Pattern" which has names of people in cells and I want to count the cells in each shift Mornings, Afternoons and Nights in order to get an idea of how much it costs to man each shift. However some shifts have seven people, some have six, some have five. I want to be able to count them automatically.

Is there a way to do this please.

You can use the COUNTIF  function....

   =COUNTIF(A1:A10, "Mornings")

...which counts the occurrences of "Mornings" in the range A1:A10.

Look at the COUNTIF function.  lets say cells A1:A25 contains people and cells B1:B25 contains "Mornings", "Afternoons" and "Nights".  then the number of people in the morning would be =COUNTIF(A1:A25,"Mornings")   the number of people in the afternoon would be =COUNTIF(A1:A25,"Afternoons"), etc.

Hello Experts

No I just want to count the number of people on each shift.

There are a maximum of 7 people per shift. I have manually edited the number, but I will be handling quite a lot of data, therefore automatic counting is essential.

To count cells with data (numbers and letters) use Counta().  "Count" just counts numbers.
