Hi All,
I have a list of scores and what their names are, how do I look through the table and find out the appropriate name. I can separate the beginning and end of the range into two cells if this helps. Example:
1.00 to 2.14 = Jim
2.15 to 2.90 = Billy
2.91 to 4.00 = Joan
Therefore if I got a score of 2.20, the name would be Billy.

a "lookup" table based on an "index" value in the table's left-most

To use VLOOKUP in your case, try the following:
1) On another worksheet, named Lookup, put this in A1:B6...
Score Name
0 N/A
1 Jim
2.15 Billy
2.91 Joan
4.01 N/A
2) Use a formula like this to retrieve the values:
=VLOOKUP(A2,Lookup!$A$2:$B
