The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

DCOM-Server Side Excel

Asked by MattMa01 in Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet Software, Microsoft IIS Web Server, Active Server Pages (ASP)

I have an asp.net 2 application that uses MS excel 2003 on the server running window server 2003. I have recently become aware that this is not a wise move but in the short term this is our lot. The application has been running fine until it recently started having problems launching the excel. There was no apparent event that triggered the change. It now returns the error

Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {00024500-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} failed due to the following error: 80080005.

A search of the net and Expert Exchange returned a variety of things to consider, primarily around the launch and access permission in the DCOM security tab. I tried a large number of things to get this to work including

i) ensuring that network service account has local launch permissions+using 'invoking user' identity (c.f ccrowe blog entry on the x80070005 error)
ii) running IIS 6 under the local system account
iii) running in IIS5 isolation mode
iv) reinstalling excel and ensuring nothing in the installation is set to be installed on first use
v) reboot etc

All with no luck. However we did stumble across a work around (which is very unsatisfactory) whereby if the DCOM identity is set to 'this user' and that user remains logged on then it works. This seems to be something equivalent to 'interactive user' being selected.

Any suggestions on what might be causing this or additional tests that might help isolate the issue would greatly appreciated as what little hair I have lives in fear!

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Matt
