Question

Formulas not updating properly

Asked by: BaupostJR

We have a user and the formulas on this one document don't seem to update. It's a simple formula of =cell*cell (ie, =A1*A2)
It simply won't update
we've checked to make sure calculation is set to automatic and it is. we've tried setting it to manual and hitting F9 and it doesn't make a difference
What DOES make a difference is if I click on the cell, highlight the formula at the top of the screen and hit the green check box.

Now, we tried this on another PC, and it updates automatically no problems.

We've tried restarting Excel as well. Both PCs have the same Excel AddIns installed also.

It did it a few weeks ago and CTRL+ALT+F9 worked. Now it does not.

It could sound a little absurd/stupid but have checked to make sure the formula column type is set number format. Also, if it is number format, sometiems with me the it does not change automatically, so I select the whole column and in first of the first cell a pop shows up, I just select that click on convert to number.

Hope this helps.

P.

If you actually see the formula displayed in the cell, then I suspect it has been formatted as text, in which case you would need to format the cell as General (or anything but Text really) and then edit and re-enter the cell.
Regards,
Rory

Sorry for the typos dude, I am at work so trying to type really fast.

The formula data is not displayed in the cell, what is displayed is the OLD number that was calculated. IE we changed a number in another cell and the result cell did not update, it stayed the same.

by: roryaPosted on 2009-06-01 at 08:33:00ID: 24518559

Does the formula *directly* refer to the cell that you changed?

by: BaupostJRPosted on 2009-06-01 at 08:33:50ID: 24518570

The formula is just one cell times another cell equals... so yes.

Also, if you open Excel in Safe Mode (hold down Ctrl while opening normally), then open the file, does it calculate ok?

I'll try that. I've heard that uninstalling and reinstalling doesn't fix this issue. Is there a way to COMPLETELY uninstall (reg entries, folders, etc...)

by: byundtPosted on 2009-06-01 at 10:34:29ID: 24519799

Since your workbook recalculates on other people's computers, the file is probably not corrupted. If the workbook recalculates in Safe mode, then it is likely a problem with the user profile. That's why Rory was asking you to make that experiment.

Before you attempt to completely uninstall Office, I suggest rebuilding your toolbar file to factory specifications. You do this while Excel is not running by renaming your *.xlb toolbar file to *.old. This file, which always exists but may be hidden, is frequently corrupted. If you have tried reinstalling Office or repairing an existing installation, any toolbar corruption problems remain because the installer won't reset the toolbar file.

After renaming the toolbar file, Excel notices during launching that it doesn't have one and creates a new copy to factory specs. Mine (for Excel 2003) is called Excel11.xlb and is located in the XLSTART folder. Your name and location may be different, so please search for it (and there may even be more than one on the computer).

The XLSTART folder is most often located in two places:
C:\Documents and Settings\your Windows log-in name\Application Data\Microsoft\EXCEL\XLSTART
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 11\XLSTART              This path is for Excel 2003. Earlier versions have a different number after Office
IMPORTANT: The Application Settings folder is hidden by default--so you won't be able to see it unless you choose the option to "Show hidden files and folders" in Windows Explorer's Tools...Folder Options...View menu item

If the preceding doesn't help, you may also want to  launch Excel with the RegServer option to reset the registry settings to factory specs. You do this from the Start....Run command line. On my computer, the command looks like "C:\Program files\Microsoft Office\Office11\EXCEL.EXE" /RegServer

Finally, consider removing any files you find in your XLSTART folder. These may contain macros that are causing the problems.

Adobe Acrobat and Norton Anti-Virus are known to have conflicts with Excel. Usually, upgrading to the latest version of these programs will solve the problem, but please post a comment if your computer has (or had) them installed.

I tried it in safe mode and it worked.
then I tried it in normal mode and it worked suddenly.
I'm going to see if it sticks.
