I've had an issue passed to me in regards to an Excel backup file not behaving as it should. The user has a shared Excel file which automatically backs itself up. As standard in Excel it should name its self "Backup of 'filename'.xlk" However, somehow, the user has managed to save it as an xlk file but without the 'Backup of' part in the filename. This differs from the shares other archived documents of same name. I've had a mess around with the procedure and can't replicate it. I have found some stuff on the web in regards to writing macros to change the name but the user has clearly not done this to alter the filename. I think removing her profile and re-performing the save process may fix it, but i'm reluctant to so this as the user is a bit of a duffer and it will open up a can of worms. One thing to note is i am told she was 'upgraded' from win 2k to XP at some point - could this have had any effect?
Any advice much appriciated.

Thanks for that. Problem is if it had been renamed then the next time she saves the original document it should re-create another 'backup of'' xxx.xlk file, but it doesnt - it actually over-writes the problem file meaning that even Excel thinks that it this is the correct backup file.
I'm flumexed on this one!
If you supplant an original with a backup by simply renaming it, then it will no longer back itself up.
Maybe she has restored a backup on two occasions, each by simply renaming the backup file. Once she renamed it using the XLS extension, the other time keeping the XLK extension.
It is pure speculation, but I believe it would create the conditions you are seeing.

I can configure a workbook to back itself up (BackupCreator.xls) which creates (Backup of BackupCreator.xlk)
Your user may have opened the backup, intending to restore it, tried to save it as the original filename.
She may have noticed that it was an XLK, and tried to save it as (BackupCreator.XLK) using SaveAs. This isn't an option there.
She may then have exited Excel and simply RENAMED her file as BackupCreator.xlk, manually, thereby keeping what she thought was the proper extension.
I think she may need to only open her XLK file and SaveAs, back to the XLS extension (remember to re-enable the Backup setting since it is not part of her XLK file)
